Post subject:  Headed to Camp Lejeune

I got orders to Camp Lejeune and will be headed out there very soon. I've got a 20' custom mud boat and have plans to put a new GTR 40 on it in a few months. I'd love to bring it to NC with me and do some exploring on new backwaters. I don't know anyone out there, and I'm wondering if anyone on here is located out that way. I duck hunt, bass fish, catch frogs, fish for redfish and trout, etc.. There's always extra room in a 20' boat. Anyone?

I moved from lejeune a year ago. PM me and I can point you in the right direction. Not a Mecca for ducks, but they are there if you work for them. Frogs are thick, reds and specks are there but don't expect it to be gulf coast quality, commercial netters have hurt those waters badly. Overall though it's a fun place for an outdoorsman.

Plenty for an outdoorsman to do there. Semper Fi. Spent plenty of time in those pine woods. ON base hunting was great in the 90's.

Because this post came back from the past, I’ll help with some more hints. Drive north! Get up to Hyde county, hunt public land up that direction. We used to rent a camper from the MWR, have one truck haul that, and the other haul the boat, and spend the weekends up there hunting public water. Where you would see 30 ducks in SE NC in a day, you would see 1000+ easily up there. 2 hrs makes all the difference.

Also, go drive around mattamuskeet one time. It’s worth seeing. The hunting is bad, but it’s worth seeing. The campground on the inland shore is fun during duck season.

I’ll post pics later. They are on my old phone. The main birds up there are pintail, wigeon, and teal. Blacks and swans are there too.

It’s a great area. The blind laws are the only headache about it. Worth the drive though. Also, cherry point has better ducks than lejeune (it’s slightly further north) and also around core sound.

I did kill some really nice ducks though very close to lejeune if you want guidance there. I have a nice blind in the Cyprus only accessible by mid boat or pirogue that I killed a good bit of woodies and a few black ducks from as well. PM me if you want more specific guidance. Biggest tip though, get far away from people, and keep your spots secret.

I’d be curious to know if you’re hunting the spot I used to hunt when I was there (and still in the corps). I had one spot there that used to hold a few sets of mallards around dec
