Terra, ranger can correct me if he likes because I have never served but from seeing my good friends that have, it seems to me that in the thick of it in a combat zone very few soldiers think or care about why they are there. Their biggest drive many times is simply the people fighting beside them. While I'm sure some struggle with why they are fighting at all its probably more of catalyst that makes worse the hard times of war and the effects afterwards but not usually the main source
