Post Biden Bungles - Taiwan / Phillipines
Less than a week after Biden's inauguration - China openly warned Taiwan that any attempt to seek independence "means war". Taiwan's President Tsai, however, has repeatedly said that Taiwan is already an independent state, making any formal declaration unnecessary.

China and Taiwan have had separate governments since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. Beijing has long tried to limit
Taiwan's international activities and blocked UN actions to protect Taiwan's independence.

Tensions have increased in recent years and Beijing has not ruled out the use of force to take the island back. Although Taiwan is officially recognised by only a handful of nations, its democratically elected government has strong commercial and informal links with many countries. Like most nations, the US has no official diplomatic ties with Taiwan, but a US law does require it to provide the island with the means to defend itself.

......

IMO - Biden has already proved he is too weak to protect both Taiwan and the Philippines....

It is looking more and more like China will take military action on Taiwan and seize
control of it and it's vast exports and manufacturing capabilities....

In recent days a full flight of Chinese fighters and heavy bombers flew through the US
defenses in broad daylight in a full on show of strength that they could bomb Taiwan
should they choose to....

Since Biden took office China has moved over 200 naval vessels into Taiwanese waters
and has openly fired on vessels - without US intervention....

Such weakness will lead to the end of democratic Taiwan and a military Chinese takeover....

.........

A top US military commander has warned that China's threat to invade Taiwan with military force has become more pressing than many people understand, warning that Beijing considers reclaiming control over Taiwan its "number one priority."

"My opinion is that this problem is much closer to us than most think," said Admiral John Aquilino, the Biden administration's nominee for the commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command.

"The most dangerous concern is that of a military force against Taiwan," he stressed during a senate confirmation hearing on Tuesday.

Aquilino called on Washington to adopt a proposed $27 billion (€23 billion) plan to enhance the US' defense in Indo-Pacific "in the near term and with urgency."

"The Chinese Communist Party has generated some capabilities in the region that are designed to keep us out," he warned.

According to Bonnie Glaser, director of the Washington-based China Power Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

China uses gray zone tactics against neighboring countries to signal its power, Glaser explained.

Over the weekend, more than 200 Chinese vessels were spotted near a reef in the South China Sea that's claimed by the Philippines.

In February, Japan and the US expressed concern over China's new coast guard law which authorizes Chinese coast guard to open fire at foreign vessels in contested waters, including the disputed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.

Beijing's latest military actions and decisions have renewed concerns over a militarization of the Asia-Pacific among China's neighboring countries.

According to Glaser, China recognizes its ability to put pressure on other countries through methods that are just below the threshold of triggering military responses from the US.

"If China only intimidates, harasses and bullies other countries, it will be more challenging for the US to respond effectively," Glaser said.

"The ability to use large numbers of coast guard or maritime militia vessels in the East China Sea and South China Sea really ends up strengthening Beijing's sovereignty claims. It also aims at convincing other countries that they shouldn't challenge Chinese interests or they will pay a price," she added.

The U.S. dramatically increased its arms sales to Taiwan during the term of former President Donald Trump. On Thursday, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said it has received no indication that arms sales already approved will be halted or altered under Biden.

However....

The US Department of State is pausing the implementation of those agreements and others to allow the new Biden administration an opportunity to determine whether they meet current US objectives, said a department official, who asked not to be identified.

The official characterized the pause as routine. It was not clear how long it may be in place.

In regard to the Philippines - also within days of Biden's inauguration - China issued a threat of war
without any US response to date !

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippines has protested a new Chinese law that authorizes its coast guard to fire on foreign vessels and destroy other countries' structures on islands it claims, Manila’s top diplomat said Wednesday.

Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said in a tweet that the new Chinese law “is a verbal threat of war to any country that defies” it. Failure to challenge the law “is submission to it,” he said.

China transformed seven disputed reefs in the Spratlys, the most hotly contested region in the South China Sea, into missile-protected island bases, including three with military-grade runways. China and Southeast Asian nations have been negotiating a regional “code of conduct” to discourage aggression in the disputed waters but the talks have been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

China’s coast guard is also active in the vicinity of uninhabited East China Sea islands controlled by Japan but claimed by Beijing.

Yesterday - China openly threatened the Biden administration again over Taiwan !

On Monday, 10 Chinese military aircraft – eight fighter jets and two surveillance aircraft - entered Taiwan’s air defence identification zone. On Friday, Beijing sent a similar sortie involving 20 aircraft.

China has warned the US against crossing its “red line” after an American ambassador
visited Taiwan at the weekend, making it the first such official visit in the last 42 years.

On Monday, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian, while replying to a query about the US ambassador’s visit, said: “I want to stress that the one China principle is a universally recognised norm for international relations and a common consensus recognised, accepted and practiced by the vast majority of countries in the world.”

He emphasised that the Taiwan question is the “most important and sensitive issue in China-US relations.”

The spokesperson urged the US “to fully recognise that the Taiwan question is highly sensitive, and that it should abide by the one China principle and the three China-US joint communiques.

“It must stop any official interaction with Taiwan, refrain from sending any wrong signals to Taiwan independence forces, stop any attempt to cross the bottom line, and properly handle Taiwan-related issues with prudence, lest it should damage China-US relations as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” Mr Zhao cautioned the US.

But Taiwan’s foreign ministry welcomed the visit of the US ambassador and, on Monday, tweeted: “What a triumvirate! Minister Wu, President Whipps & Ambassador Hennessey-Niland are as one when it comes to trilateral cooperation. #Taiwan, #Palau & the #US are forces for good working together in promoting peace, security & prosperity in the #IndoPacific & around the world.”
