While hunting the north end of Lacassine NWR yesterday, my 10 year old little boy shot his first teal. The bird fell in the water, 50 yards or so outside the decoys, and floated toward the bayou. I began to roll up the boat blind so that we could go retrieve it. Before I could, less than five minutes later, a boat with two guys in it passed in the bayou and saw the downed bluewing hen. They stopped to look, but apparently didn't notice my decoy spread 100 yards away. I heard the conversation between the two as they neared the bird. Guy 1: "I think that's a dead bird." Guy 2: "Yeah, that's a bird."......(as he leans over to pick up the bird)....."It's got a band too!" Me: "Hey...........Hey, that's our bird!" (standing up in the blind and waving my hands) Guy 2: (long pause and look of surprise) "Fuck you *****!" Guy 1 puts boat in gear and drives away. I was left with the task of explaining to my little boy that he had heard correctly, that he had shot a banded bird before me, but that he would never see it because the two guys had stolen it. Once he realized what had happened, he cried harder than I've seen in a long time. I know it's a long shot, but if anyone knows how to retrieve his band, please let me know. I left a message at the refuge headquarters yesterday. I don't care about retribution for the thieves. I just want him to be able to take his band to show and tell at school. I also don't want him growing up hating hunting and/or other hunters. |

Thanks Guys, that's awful nice of you. I couldn't give him someone else's band. I was just wondering if someone knew a way of tracking reported bands or something like that. Maybe there's someone with the USFWS that could help with this sort of thing. Thanks for being so generous though. |

Did you get a good look at the ass clowns that stole your sons bird? I if it was me I couldn't wait to run into them again. I don't know what I'd do but everyone would know what they did. This makes me sick to think some one would act like that. I would have drove over and delivered that bird to you and gave you a congrats. Thanks to the guy helping him out with the band! |

Great job to whoever is contributing the band! I bet those two ass hats are real proud of that band. If they would just go out and shoot a big buck off the road at night next and brag about the shoulder mount they would be the Kings of the idiots! |

Its a long shot, but call 1-800-327-BAND and tell them what happened and to look out for any BWT hens reported from that area. Like I said, doubt they would cooperate or give you a name but its worth a shot. |

That's a damn disgrace to the sport... Unfortunately stuff like this happens all too often all over the place... Just FYI, my brother has a big vinyl printer and made a large stencil he keeps in his truck along with a can of red spray paint... It simply says "THIEF" in cap letters. So far He's has the opportunity to use it on a boat, after finding all his perch traps, a houseboat after finding a grille and generator, and the tailgate of a truck after finding a deer he shot with his bow... Yeah... I guess it's vandalism and may be no better than them but it'll make the jackasses think twice about pulling that type of stunt when they're repainting or cleaning up paint off their shit!!!! |

I can't believe grown men would actually do that. Please expline to your son that everyone that duck hunts aren't like these clowns. Stories like this are why duck hunters get bad raps. I'm glad people stepped up on MMT to get your son a band, If i would have seen this thread earlier i would have offered one up to him as well. Hope he shoots another banaded duck with a band next year. |

Hate to hear that for your little boy. Try to use it as a learning and character building experience. We will have people treat us wrong our whole life but learning that you control your mood/outlook and not others is a great lesson especially this early on |
