Do yall think a larger oil cooler is needed for a motor with .065 decked heads, mikuni, modified intake, and exhaust?

Running a oil cooler on a stage 1 engine isn't necessary. The guys that have them installed on their engines do so mostly for looks.

And at $8 a pair you can afford to change em out as often as necessary.
If sumthin's gotta give it's good to know dat it's easy to fix on da water and it ain't gonna break da bank.

What is a safe operating temp for these motors? Anyone using an oil temp gauge?

When would you say the extra cooler is a necessity? I'll be running slightly modded heads, roller rockers, longer push rods, oversized valves, modded stock carb, cam, and exhaust. I was planning on adding an extra cooler, but don't have an awesome spot to put one on a vertical motor. I'm afraid I'll tear it off if I mount it to the fan shroud.

It's really not an necessity, I was just giving Craig a hard time.

It's defiantly a plus to have one, more oil capacity = lower oil temps = more life out of your motor = better for the long term on the engine, however the average person won't put enough hours on their motor to even justify it.

Were increasing the air flow on these engines to nearly double overstock just by removing the mesh grass guard. Which imo deems the over sized cooler unnecessary, but...... it does incease oil capasity (a little) which isn't a bad thing. I personally think the oil cooler looks like a big ass snake took a big ass shit on top the motor!

For a few dollars and the possibility of keeping you motor 35* or more cooler it can't hurt. Don't know if Marty's temp readings were just normal running but I can only imagine how high the temps can get when your grinding your way through the thick stuff. I know mine has gotten way to hot for my liking a few times...

I took it off to pull the filter to look inside the carb. Had a little fuel coming out the carb or so I though. Still learing about this thing.
