 Re: Future Career
There is really no future in it if you want a family, but there is just about always some company hiring for tug and barge hands on the river.
When I graduate this year I plan to work the river for a few years and see if something better around the house turns up while I am out there. Right now work is slooooww here since Natural Gas prices have gone upside down, don't be afraid to get out and travel some.

 Re: Future Career
As previously stated, what you get a BS in many times has little to do with your search for most jobs. An employer will likely want to teach you how he does things and the degree shows you are willing to stay the course and see something to completion. Also, I have many friends in the machining business and they do well.

 Re: Future Career
I work as a Pipeline Surveyor. I do Auto-CADD and GIS mapping and field work. I don't love my job but for now the money is good. I'm sitting for my Professional Surveying license in a few states this fall if I pass the first exam. It has been a long road to this point... I should have been a doctor...they make more money and have more time off.. 5 years of schooling and all I have to show for it is a nice truck a nice boat and too many decoys to put out by myself...
When I figure out how to make a living killing animals...I'm outa this industry.

If I had to go back and go to school for something, I would go to be a vet, and open my own clinic. I could see myself enjoying that job.

Jw, what all there is to "draft". I know theres piping, what else? Also, whats average salary of a drafter around there? I looked it up, and had all sorts of different answers which i doubt any were accurate.

I am a draftsman. I actually do more design work using our design software and detailing work. It has its perks. Typical draftsman wont get paid much. You have to venture out and show you can be capable of some design to get more money!

 Re: Future Career
Like Maxxis said a "drafter" wont make much money, but a "designer" can make a decent living.

Shit, daycare alone will run you 4-600 a month, and that doesn't include diapers, food, toys etc...

 Re: Future Career
If I was born rich instead of good looking I wouldn't have to work..
Figure out how to sit at you house and have other people make you about 150k a year. And when you do, let me know so I can do the same thing...

 Re: Future Career
work wow I wish I could go to work!!!! I was diganosed with cancer last year. I was in a bad car wreck the year before. I have not been able to work since jan of 2010. I drove a gas tanker and made real good money. I loved it to boot. I never worked over 50 hrs a week, and had the weekends off. NOW that being said I did go to college for as another poster dais pissed away 2 years of college and if I had it to do over I would more than likely I DON't know what I would do. I went to school for machinist but if I had to do it over again I would go to school to work on medical machinery radiation machines, xray machines and stuff like that you would get the travel in high pay, and plenty of vacation time to hunt. but thats me.
