well after looking into these mudmotors i have decided to build my own. save some money and have a fun project for the spring. i am looking to build a 25 hp short shaft surface drive. i am looking for some help. i have some ideas in my head and have been watching youtube videos getting more. the only thing i am stuck on is the gears and drive. belt driven, chain driven. and where i can get a prop.
also if anyone has plans for a surface drive and they wouldnt mind sharing that would be great. any info would help out a tonne.

You can actually buy a MB frame in pieces from MB, unless you were planning to actually mill or cut your own designed parts.

i see bog hog has a pre fabbed design. everything comes in the package minus the motor. where do i find these other frames maybe the price is cheaper.

Or just do like R.B. and buy a GDSD frame
then part out stuff till you break even and
buy a motor and have a few fab shop daydreams
let J. fab a bit on yer hull and - viola - it's alive !

LOL

:D

i was thinking of making it as cheap as i can. my father inlaw works as a wleder and get all all the materials including the motor for free. so all i would have to buy would be a prop and a shaft. maybe the gears. but a couple hundred bucks is better than 4000 for a store bought motor and i can mod it the way i want for it to fit my john boat. the only other thing i am stuck on is engine size. my boat is rated for a max hp of 25 outboard. which is only 150 pounds i know the store bought surface drive motors are over 200 i am affraid i might bend the transom. if i build my own i can make it lighter and make a 25 hp work.

i have looked on the md sight and cant find anything for build it yourself kits. the only one i found was the bog hog kit. and it is pricey. i dont want to spend more than a grand for a kit. if anyone out there has a frame they want to part with or parts i would be interested in that.

that is pretty steap if i am going to do that i might as well spend another 2 grand and get a used surface drive. thanks for the help though. i have a few things to think about of course.

Post subject:  Re: surface drive plans?

got started on the surface drive last week. total invested for everything is.
total invested for everthing is 1300. 20 hp horizontal engine. a 11 x 10 prop all the metal, chain and sprockets.

the rig is looking good so far one more day and it should be finished then i have to do some testing. we decided to go with a chain drive setup. and 3 to 1 ratio. i will post pics when it is all painted and finished. also maybe a video of the first run.

Post subject:  Re: surface drive plans?

You are going to struggle with 3:1 ratio and a 11X10 prop. Most designs are running a 1.2:1 or 1.5:1 ratio spinning that prop and using a 23 + hp engine. Also, chains do not absorb shock loads like a timing belt does. Just thoughts.

I hope you at least asked something like this, "Hey, somebody on MMT told me if I called you, you could send me a copy of the GTR plans. Would you mind doing that?"

That way he would at least know that it was somebody on here screwing with you and not you screwing with him. Either way, deep down I think you know it was a good joke...

Well it just so happens that I am in the process of building a chain driven SDMM that will run aluminum props from 6.5" to 10" in diameter. Reason for the aluminum props is so that they will be the weak point in the system due to chain drive being more unforgiving when encountering hard surfaces. Drive will be 1.2:1 as I want more torque than speed. My particular setup will be able to handle up to a 22 hp engine with only minor changes in sprocket and chain size. I will keep everyone informed on the progress and updated pics.
