what type of sandpaper should i use? I want to take it off, sand it , and repaint. Anyone done this before? thanks

i tried to paint my stock muffler on my pd . used aircraft remover( removes all paint) then took wire brush and then went to auto zone and got 2000 degree header paint and painted it. i thought it might work put like 3 good coats of paint but the first time took it out the paint had started to come off. the problem is that the muffler get really hot and then water hits it and cools it off and that is y the paint didnt work . if i way u i would do research on some paints and find a really durable paint.

Some hi-temp paints require hating befor painting. If you paint while cool then heat it the metal expands which causes the cracking and peeling. Thats how I did my bbq pit. I fired it up and painted it after it got hot eventhough the directions didn't say to. Never had a proble with peeling after two years.

Sandblast it. Then paint it...


Thats what i did. One trip in saltwater... No more paint. Save your time and money just get a stainless muffler.

Sandin takes off metal - use NAVAL JELLY - no work involved - looks like a new penny and prevents new rust till you finish painting....

But it'll just rust again and the paint will come off no matter what you do...

Buy cheep ones every three years or so and no worries...

thanks guys. guess ill just save my time and money. i plan on ordering an evt exhaust pretty soon and be done with it
