Hey Guys first off I am brand new to the forum and have been looking on here for a while researching due to being in the market for my first boat and surface drive motor. Due to this being my first surface drive I have been doing nothing but research on all the boat and motor manufactures I have found. I have firmly decided on the boat but when it comes to the motor im not even close. Due to it being my first SD I guess im not really sure what i am looking for. One thing is for sure what I am going to do with this boat reverse is defiantly a must. I narrowed it down between two motors the GTR and the PD FPR. I was leaning more towards the GTR just for the fact all the great reviews I was hearing about it. I told myself I was not going to pick a motor just on what I was reading and was in the process of setting up a test drive for both. I was going to use the test drive for my final decision. While I was in the process of this I come across these two new motors from Mud Buddy the Sport H & V. I have searched and read as much I can find on these motors and was just wondering if anyone has any insight on these motors as far as dependability, power, performance? Customer service is big to me and I have heard horror stories about Mud Buddy customer service. Like I said I am new at this and I know these stories could be just that "stories". Being new to this site it looks like there are a lot of good people on here and I am not trying to start any kind of brand war whatsoever. I am just looking for the most information from people who know way more about this topic then I do. Yes I have used the search feature on here several times just wondering if anyone has any information I have not seen yet or any good advice would be appreciated. Thanks for the help guys!

Wanna be a guinea pig or go with a proven motor? Gtr and pd have proven themselves time and time again. For customer service Prodrive is gonna be damn hard to beat. What hull are you planning on running

Set up a test drive on all of the motors you're considering. That's the smartest thing you can do. You're welcome to try mine if you'd like, not sure where you're located at though.
Only thing I'll say about the new MB motors is that nobody can give you an honest review on them, because nobody has one. They haven't been released yet. I'm not bad mouthing it, just saying that the only folks that can give you a review are the same ones trying to sell them. While they very well could be the next big thing, I'd personally wait a couple years for the kinks to be worked out of em. No different than a brand new concept for a car or truck, there's always something that isn't quite right & needs addressed. Good luck with your purchase.

All new designs are going to have issues, personally I would wait 1-2 years on the new mudbuddy and let other people figure out those problems, and wait til they are corrected.

I had several problems out my first prodrive that I bought in late 2005, but KP always took care of me, even when I was out of warranty. I never paid a single dime to have anything fixed on that motor. The PD that I am running now, I bought in late 2009, and I have not had a single problem with it. That's my .02

I am located in Spring, Tx just north of Houston. Sorry just joined some I am trying to edit all my profile information right now. The hull I am planning on getting is a 1750 or 1754. I really like the Gator Trax hulls but if I ended up getting the GTR I would probably have them build the hull for me. I have heard great things about both these hulls.

You will be fine with a gatortrax boat and a GTR if that is what you decide on. I run one myself. Another good option to save some coin is to talk to some of the custom builders on this site. I love my gatortrax, but I think they have become overpriced for the market they serve.

I agree with the others, i would give the new MB motors some time to work out the kinks. Test drive the PD and GTR and see which suits you, just decide whether you want full power or instant.

def. would give the boat builders on here a look if I were you. They are all good guys and can build a quality boat with all the options you choose at a better price.

Camo I appreciate the offer and I defiantly would not mind meeting up with you and doing a test drive. As long as you dont mind a rookie tagging along and asking a lot of questions. Going to have to wait a few weeks before I can climb in a boat recovering from a back surgery right now. If its not a problem I can send you a PM when I am ready and we can set up a day and time.

What are you going to be using the boat for? GatorTrax does cost you but they go out for their way to make sure your happy with your purchase and make your hull is exactly the way you want. I had them paint my hide recently and when I realized that it was not what expected ( camo looked great but was missing some colors I wanted) kent was all over the situation and didn't charge me for any of the material or labor to fix it to what i was looking for. As far as the motor goes, to each his own, like others have said, try out everything. Knowledge is power and what works in some areas may not work as well in others. Some people are brand loyal but you really can't go wrong with any of the big brands. once you know what works best for your type of needs, based on region and terrain, it mostly comes down to personal reviews from locals. Good luck.

FowlLaw, give that back a little time to mend before you jump on the tiller of a surface drive. It is a little more demanding than an outboard. I'm not telling you what I heard but what I know! ;)

The new MBs look interesting to say the least, time will tell for sure. The little bit I have seen with the color drawing of the H gear drive surprised me. The gear system is like a Mercury, just like a Merc Cruiser Bravo Drive system used on I/Os. They are well built, but as a service center we see them in here all time with issues from hitting stuff in the river, not sure this is going to be a system you want in a MM, but as I stated, time will tell.

Hey Fowllaw. Im about hr ana half north east of ya. Just talked to MB and Ill have the 44H second week of Aug. Not sure if ya wanna wait that long before you buy but it will be in the water if ya wanna try it out. My boat is or was a 17' bass tracker that I redone the bottom and gutted out the inside. Made new front and rear decks. Not sure how its gonna perform but it shouldnt be too bad. Hunted out of two different boats last year that were straight from the factory and there was alot I didnt like. Just were missing that custom touch. So I made my own.

I don't mind it though. I like knowing it'll go where I need it to if I get in a bind. One morning I was with Payton in his old gtrax and the guys we were with stopped cause the water had dropped out. There were running a lt and the prop was up in the air and it was running. I had no place to go and knew I was about the get a prop in my grill. Payton nailed it tho and we ran up beside them. It was like we were on a rail it turned so quick. It scared me bad but I don't think I ever said anything.... I probably didn't want to look like a bitch
