Post subject:  Hydro turf desinagrating?

I installed grey hydro turf last November on my rig. After hunting season I left it stored in my buddies backyard, it sat uncovered for 5 months. I took it out last weekend and noticed that the surface seems to be desinagrating. When I put my hand along the surface a grey coat of dirt/material seems to be coming off. Since the boat was stored outside, it's really hard to tell if its just dirt, or I'd it's both dirt and hydroturf.

I live in Florida and was inquiring if you guys have seen this before, or if there is supposed to be some kind of chemical protector to use on hydroturf. ( I thought this stuff held up to the sun ? )

From the posts i've seen the sun is hard on them.I bought a used boat with turf on it and ya can tell it sat in the sun for a a long time.Real soft and will rub off if ya try.It will stay covered now.

It's made to hold up but anything will break down if you just leave it out uncovered

My camo turf did the same. You need to cover your boat or something to keep the sun off of it. Take a pic and contact hydroturf. They will likely make it right. They did for me

There is not a protective coating on hydro turf. It is the same color and material thru and thru. The sun is hard on everything especially a boat. If you try to replace it acetone will make it easier to remove whether it had 3m or the cement paste.

Mine has been sitting in the sun for over 5 years and its still fine. It will collect alot of grime. Get on it with a good scrub brush, soap and water. Its probably it more crud than anything. Thats why I recommend the molded over the cut HT. The molded has more of a closed cell feeling on the outer surface than the cut which think holds up better.

$80 dollars a sheet for the big one in swamp camo, grooved with 3m. Just put down 2 sheets. Gotta order 2 more.

mine did it had them replaced , pro drive great service . but when you spend that type of money you would think that it would hold up longer than a yr . , it has been covered this year but will not buy again looking at sea dek now .

I just looked up Seadek. Any body use them before? handle the UV and sun better than Hydroturf?

My hull sits uncovered and I've never had an issue with my hydroturf

After 3 seasons of exposure to the sun, freezing rain, and snow the B-grade molded hasn't had any issues here either.

this is what some of mine is starting to do.

this is inside the deck which doesnt get as much exposure

Mine did that as well after about 6 months. Supposedly there was a batch that did not have any of the UV blocker/inhibitor in it. some high traffic spots in the middle of the drivers area, etc were really, really thin. I used a vibrating multi function tool from harbor freight, and it scraped it right off. Wasn't easy, and a blade wider than the 2" one would have helped greatly, but i was able to "shear" the oddly shaped pieces (front deck, with hatch/troll motor mount, etc.) off in one piece to use as a template for the replacement turf I got.

Maybe its the camo color mix?

Don't know. I bought mine from Gator Trax, it didn't take long at all to see that it was not "right". I contacted them, and they were aware of the problem. Apparently after a few people reported that it was coming apart rather quickly, Hydroturf admitted that the factory left out the UV inhibitor in it. Just like the above pictures, the ligher the color, the more deteriorated it was. A friend has turf in his boat, and has had it for a few years now, its sits outside, uncovered, 100% of the time, and he has no issues with it. IIRC, it is a diamond pattern camo, not like the above picture.

Lunacris: Where did you get your turf, and how long have you had it? I had bought mine sometime around may '11 (don't rememeber exactly when)

If you have not ever handled the 2 there is a difference IMO between the molded and cut patterns. Im guessing the molded is done by heat which seems to seal the surface. Molded is a smooth kinda glazed finish where as the cut is a rough more open cell finish if that make sense.

Yes, that makes sense, but I don't have any experience with the solid colored stuff. It wasn't fun to swap it out, but if it lasts for 4-5 years, Its worth it to me for the slip resistance and noise reduction in the boat, IMHO. If my camo deteriorates again, I'll most probably go with a solid color!

its a late 2010 gator hide, hydroturf came with the boat. so i must have the stuff that they had issues with.
