Help on deciding on boat an motor.
First off I'm new on this forum. My name is Matt, I live in middle Tennessee.
I have a 2011 16ft war eagle with a 70 hp yamaha on the back. Great boat but I think I want a mud motor.
I've been eyeing two boats, excel f4 shallow water, and a gator trax 17ft hybrid.
Motor- mud buddy Black Death 5500, and a pro drive.
Both boats are built like tanks.
Need pros an cons Mainly use for duck hunting but I will fish out of it some.

Re: Help on deciding on boat an motor.
IF those are the ONLY 2 options you'll consider, then go with the Gator Trax. Much better built & stronger hull, plus you'll get ALOT better customer service from the folks at BFC Marine then you will from Excel.
Before you go jump into a mud rig, I strongly urge you to try some different rigs in the same conditions you normally run with the same loads you normally carry. I don't think you'll be too impressed going from a 70hp outboard to a 35hp mud motor.

I can't really try these boats out, and under normal load. Is a 35hp the biggest they make?

Re: Help on deciding on boat an motor.
35/36 is the biggest offered, but there are aftermarket performance parts available to hop up the hp to usually around 50hp & stay reliable. Don't confuse that with a 50hp outboard though. On the 2 hulls you listed, a 50hp mud motor is only gonna run low-mid 30's.

Re: Help on deciding on boat an motor.
I can go in more places with my stock 35 GTR than I could with my 50+ hp MB, but it's comparable to a 25 hp outboard speed wise.

Re: Help on deciding on boat an motor.
I love the speed of my current boat now, but I'm looking for a boat that will get me to those places my outboard won't, what would have to be done to get a gtr35 to push 50hp?

Re: Help on deciding on boat an motor.
What do you guys think a 2011 war eagle 16ft with a 2012 yamaha 70hp resale for? The motor might have 70 hours give or take. Boat is in excellent condition.
