Im looking for a mud motor to push a 16 foot john boat. Im a college student so money is tight. Is there any brands that you guys would reccomend looking into that arent as expensive as the top of the line motors that are still durable. Im looking for about a 23 hp. Thanks in advance.

Don't waste your money man, when it comes to mud motors you get what you pay for.. I'm in my last semester of college and completely understand wanting to find something cheap.. Look for you a good used 23 godevil longtail.. Should be able to pick one up that needs minimal work for around +/- 2 grand.

Buy a "used" good brand motor. You'll be better off in the long run.

Cupped up , i agree with u on the Dixie . They are junk. The copperheads are good little motors. U can buy a good used PD, GT, or Go-Devil used for the price of a new cheaper motor. You deffinatley get what u pay for . I learned the hard way when we used a Dixie in our marsh one year. Was sold befor teal season was over. I just bought a used stage 1 GTR with pretty low hours with hydrolic trim cheaper then I could of bought a cheaper new mud motor. I know where ur coming from I am out of college but I still have bills and a child so priorities are different. U can get good deals on motors with manual trim and no reverse. I like the copperheads too, no knocks on the reliability and durability...and they run good, but they don't trim down very far and you can end up in a sticky situation from what I've seen anyway. But as long as you don't stop, it'll go pretty good.

Im happy with my dixie so far, got 25hrs on it in a month. 35hp pushes my 1651 Excel quite well. You listen to some of the folks on here, I cant believe I can even kill ducks without a PD,GT.... My .000002 cents. Not saying I wouldnt want a GT, PD but with a 4 month old youngin you do what you gotta do.

My bad, yeah 23 LT all the way. Buddy has a go-devil 16hp that is IMPRESSIVE what he does with it.

Longtail all day! I will walk the dog on ANY surface drive in 9/10 scenarios, especially when quick holeshot counts.

A longtail that is set up correctly isn't bad to drive at all and cost next to nothing to maintain.

Cupped up I agree. If your going on a budget and can't afford a PD, GT or Go-Devil ( reliable surface drive even though it's pretty basic ) SD then a long tail is the way to go VS a cheap SD. Dixie , Orion, Mud Buddy are trash. Good luck on getting what your looking for.

If money is tight a long tail is the way to go. It is the most reliable of them all. Buying a used surface drive could get you set up as well but be careful what you buy. Some guys dog out those motors. Make sure to check the motor in detail. Your price range will decide which is better for you.
