Post subject:  battery advice
I need a new deep cycle trolling and starting battery for the boat. I'm thinking sealed AGM and just wanted to know which battery ya'll were running and have had good luck with??
I've narrowed down to: Optima Blue Top, Interstate, or Die Hard Platinum

Let me know what ya'll think.

I'd run just about anything but optima. QC has gone way downhill since they built their name.

I run a blue top in the mud boat and a diehard platinum in the bass boat. Both are good, I'd go with a blue top for the mud boat. It's much lighter and have run two headlights from dusk till dawn for frogging without it dieing.

I use optima, blue top in my boat. Have a red top almost ten years old, still gong strong, even after I rolled my truck.

I have both. Both good but i prefer blue top cause if you need to replace it, its easier to find an Autozone than Sears.

I've had good luck with the sears platinums. I run them in two diesel trucks and three boats, nine of them total. Oldest is only 3 yrs old. 1 warranty replacement, but I think a parasitic load killed it.

Optimas are great if you use them regularly. But if you let them sit for more than a few weeks they dont hold at all!

Optima BlueTop. It'll last all season for me running a 22" led bar and running lights. If I go on a week long trip I'll charge it before I go out. It was in the boat when I bought it 3 years ago and idk how old it was before. Still running strong.

I run wal mart batteries since I am all over the place during duck season and paddlefish season. I keep the receipt in my wallet or glove box. One sign of trouble and I head to walmart and get it switched out. My thoughts is that there is a 24 hour walmart everywhere. I buy the biggest cranking amp battery they have and drop it in the boat.

My blue top was in my boat when I bought it 3 years ago. The old guy that had the boat before me bought the battery brand new in 2009 when he bought the boat. In the 3 years I've had the battery, I've used it to start my motor, run spot light, running lights, and bilge. Now listen to this part... I have NEVER put a charger on that battery. NEVER. NOT ONCE. If it ever kicks the bucket, I'll replace it with another blue top.

O.k. I run a four stroke Yamaha 200 hp with Jack plate. I run about 42 miles of river each day. I pull up to my net raise the motor then tilt it to keep the gill netting from snagging the lower unit. I then run the net lower and trim the motor then start it. I do this 20 to 60 times a day seven days a week for six months. My Walmart battery last about five years. Nobody hates Walmart more than me however I might be five hours up river from home in a rural area or I might be on the Mississippi in northern Illinois. Sometimes the only place that has a battery is walmart.
Just my two cents. My duck boats go from Canada to Texas and all points in between.

A battery that gets used every day doesn't seem to need to be as good as a battery that gets used intermittently. Lack of use, parasitic loads, remaining discharged too long, too many recovery charge cycles, are things that kill batteries. Premium batteries, especially AGMs, seem to hold up to this sort of abuse better.

If I traveled and used my rig every day, I think I'd use an inexpensive, easy to replace battery too. You would save enough money to just carry a spare that you probably would never need.

I got a regular ole walmart battery with a small trickle charger (not an on board charger, but you hook a pig tail up to the battery and charger stays at home) and run motor, lights and bilge on it and have no problems. I just keep it plugged in and unplug the night before I use my boat and works fine.

I know it's an old thread, but...just my two cents...

I would suggest that if you want to use a battery-powered trolling motor, don't use it to power an inflatable, especially if it doesn't have a very rigid floor. The weight of a 12 volt battery is substantial. I used a trolling motor on my 13 foot aluminum square-ended canoe that I used for fishing, and I was quite pleased with the performance. I usually brought along a second fully-charged battery if I was going to be out all day. When the first battery began to lose power, I knew it was time to start heading back to my take-out spot since I really didn't want to paddle.

I own a couple "transom mount" trolling motors (one short shaft and one long shaft). Minn Kota is the brand name. Both have worked very well for as long as I've owned them (about 15-20 years). There is an adapter that one can add to a standard canoe to be able to mount a trolling motor. I have a 30 year old 17' aluminum Grumman and have used a trolling motor with the adapter on a few occasions. It is a nice boost for going up river

I run the biggest neverstart marine maxx battery at Walmart too. i'm probly in a boat 200 days a year. it works fine. should work even better since my new 40 briggs charges better than my old 36 briggs. and u can get them replaced anywhere.

I have run a exide optima dual purpose batterys in my airboats for years, no problems.

Exide and optima are two different things.

I liked optima before they sold out.

Now I mainly just run store brand stuff. Biggest sealed marine starting batts I could find for the boat and biggest agm’s I could fit in my truck.
