Post homebuilt short tails
hi all this is my first post on this forum so howdy :D

i have recently built an 11 hp tecumseh longtail, using mostly parts from home depot and some online sources for seals and bushings. (mcmaster-carr is awesome) anyway, i would really like to join the group here eventually with a higher horsepower motor that can really haul tail. seeing as there is no search on this forum (a recommendation) i would like to be able to see what others have done, even the dealers. some of my main interests are 3 gear transmissions, and shaft angles and lengths. im a big fan of building my own equipment seeing as i only spent around 1 grand for my motor, which a lot was wasted due to not knowing what i was doing. sorry for the long post, but i would just like to pick the brains of some of the home engineers out there, thanks
fishon!!

I built a small 13 hp shorttail a few years ago. If you can weld aluminum and build a longtail, you won't have too many problems. I stayed simple, no clutch and manual trim. Let me know if you have any questions. I have many hours of research into it.

It runs about 15 mph on a riveted 1436 jon with 2 lighter guys in it. I built is initially, with a 9X6 subsurface prop. Never got around to running a 10X8 surface piercing prop, but I think it would have swung it. It has a 1.5:1 reduction. May have stepped the speed up a little bit. Fun project.

actually, i'm really taking a liking to this style, you could really strap some power down on the hull with this setup:
http://www.ronniesairboats.com/mudboats.htm
http://www.airboat-transportation.com/muddhogg.html

i like the second one better with the cage over motor. if you could make it chort enough, you could put the driver seat on top, and i really like the rudder steering, set up like an airboat almost.
whats ya'lls thought? ecer seen one go through mud? they good?
