Hey guys new boat owner here. Having a few problems with my boat. Let me start by telling you what I bought. 16 foot modified v with a 22 hp predator 670cc mounted on a dixie surface drive. My first problem was it was starving for fuel. I read a few things on here and added an electric fuel pump. Problem solved there. Now I'm having a hell of a time getting on plane. I have had it on plane a few times but for the most part I can't get it up there. I've been trimming it trying to find a sweet spot. It's running a 10x8 prop so my question is should I try a smaller prop?? Maybe a 9x5? Or am I going the wrong direction?

The problem is the boat. You need a mud hull or at least a flat bottom. Where you got the frame from?

10x8 surface drive prop?
Anyone know what gear ratio the dixies run?
Most engines above 20hp tend to run 11x10 or 12.25x10, depending on the gearing and any mods. Can't say say I've seen too many 10x8s. Have seen a couple 9" props, because of refuge limitations, but that's not real common.

Btw, bernie, a 22hp sd should plane a 16ft mod v. Will it be ideal? Nope, but not as bad as the op is describing.

You played with moving shit around in your boat? What RPMs are you at? What type of load are you running?

Mod Vs aren't the best, but you should still be planing.

If you don't have a tiny tach or similar, that would be the first thing I got!

Transom height is a common cause of this problem as well. Make dead sure that you have the right height for your motor. I've had to cut down one and it is not too bad of a job if you can weld aluminum.

Did you ever get your setup running good? I am in the process of putting a 22 predator on a Dixie frame.
