Buying a used mud motor. What to look for?
I am new to the forum. First time caller, long time listener. Whatever... I am looking at buying my first mud boat/mud motor and looking to buy used. What are the key things I should look for when inspecting the motor? (i've already got a punchlist of boat and trailer things to check). The motor is (as per the ad) a 2012 Mudbuddy HD5000 BPS Vanguard 45, Marshmellow exhaust, iron mountain heads, Mikuni carb, 315 hours. meticulously maintained. I understand the nature of mud motors that there will be wear and tear and all that, but what are definite deal breakers, and what warning signs to watch for. I don't mind turning a wrench now and then, but I don't want to inherit someone else's nightmares.

1. compression test, cylinders within +/- 5 lbs. look at exhaust cracks leaks etc. 2. cranks relatively easy 3. sounds it makes while running 4. they vibrate but is it too much?(check prop also it could be the vibration problem) 5. run it for at least 30 minutes, check for heating bearings, grease coming from seals. 6. does it restart easily after running 7. put in water and run it like you stole it, that should give you the warm a fuzzy about it, but remember its not an outboard. 8. as with all used boats make your best guest of what you think of it, and if you really want it. I know I did not think or mention everything, ride and drive then decide.

Thanks both of ya. I bought it. it was pretty damned immaculate. Meticulously maintained was an understatement. No cracks, no leaks, starts up with just a touch of the key, very little vibration...surprising little. Handles in the water better than my friend's MB with half the hours. In other words... I LIKE IT. Now I have to learn how to use the whole rig. I mean REALLY use it.

What kind of hull will it be going on? That will have just as much to do with how well you like the motor as the motor itself.
