Post Mud Buddy Sport V Problems. Please Help!
Ok, I have a mud buddy sport v mag 5000. Took my boat out today and had some problems. The motor idles fine and goes into gear with no problem sounding normal but when I give a little throttle it starts knocking and has zero power. It would only run just above idle and sounds really rough. When I got out of the water and cranked it the motor sounded normal and went into gear fine with no knocking so it's only doing it with a load. When I got home I drained the lower unit and had big metal shavings stuck to the oil plug magnet. Does anyone know what might be going on?

My prodrive has done this twice. Both times it was the push rods. Sounds like you are running on one cylinder. It will run fine with no load, but when you put it under load it will only run about 5 mph wot. Check to see if you are running on one cylinder. If so, pull the valve cover off the dead side and check the valves and push rods. If it's the push rod, put it back in place, adjust the valves and you will be good to go.

Yes it was running on one cylinder and I replaced both spark plugs and I tried it after and it did the same thing. But I haven't checked the push rods and valves I will do that next. Thanks a lot

Never been into a sport v but metal shavings in oil is never good. Since the shavings stuck to the plug it tells you they are steel which my first guess would be the gears in the transmission which are binding up under a load and bogging the motor making it sound like it's running bad.

I just checked my valves and push rods. Everything seemed fine with them. So the problem must be in the lower unit. Has anyone been inside a sport v lower?

Youve solved the running on one cylinder issue? Will it run with either spark plug wire disconnected one at a time?

OK last night I got into the gears in the lower unit. Everything looked fine, no binding or teeth missing. They where spinning as the should. So my next thought is the carb must be gummed up. Any thought on that.

What else do I need to look into if I'm running on one cylinder. I've put new plugs in and checked the valves and push rods. It may be the coil ill check that next.

Leak test to make sure the valves are sealing, and also make sure your coil is Firing. I am assuming NON cdi, You can have a diode issue in the harness. The coils can fire, But a bad diode will allow the current to backfeed and kill the opposite coil.
Unplug the kill wire off each coil and go test it again under load. (you will have to choke the motor to kill it) as the kill wire is no longer attached. If it works you need to replace the bad diode.

Easy way is to pull one plug at a time. The opposite cylinder should keep it running. If not you located the bad cylinder.

Both cylinders are getting fire. I also pulled each plug at a time and it stayed running on both. So it much be in the harness?

Hard to say. You need to do a compression and leak down test now that you know the engine is firing on both cylinders

I had my carb rebuilt and when it put it back on it started pouring gas from the overflow hose coming from the float bowl. I messed with the float and think I have it set right now but its still pouring gas at idle. I thought my fuel pump might be pushing to much pressure so I replaced it with just a normal hand pump and it still does it. Is there anything else that could be causing it or is the float just not set right.

you need to adjust the float more. Also verify you have the correct needle and seat. 2.3 needle and seat size is what you need.

There is a small oring that goes around the seat. It will dry rot and leak.

Going by the shop manual i'm pretty sure I have the float set right. I've also adjusted the float more and less and same thing it never slowed down at all. And the oring should have been replaced in the rebuild. It wasn't doing this until after I had it rebuild. I may put my old needle and seat back and see it that helps.

If you used the parts that came with the rebuild kit, you used the wrong needle and seat. That part is for a motor without a fuel pump.

I got the kit from a cycle shop not BPS so it's probably the wrong needle. And yes thanks you MaXXis85

Ok putting the old needle and seat back in fixed the overflow problem. Tried the motor out this morning and it's still bogging down at take off. No power at all boggs down when I give throttle.

Might be a partially sheared fly wheel key. Did you hit anything really hard last time motor was used? Timing maybe off. ???

I talked to mud buddy and they seem to think it might be something locked up in the transmission. Does anyone know anybody around Chattanooga TN that can work on a sport v. Mud Buddy told me only two dealers really know what they are doing with a sport v but one was in Florida and the other in South Caroline. I maybe out of luck and have to try and do it myself.

You'll save a lot of time and money if you haul it to one of them, or ship it back to mb. That's not a belt with 2 gears...

Just done a compression test. I'm getting 135 on the right side and 140 on the left. Doesnt seem to be leaking on either side.

What are the chance of a video with it in the water under load. Seems we are still trying to figure out if its engine related or lower unit. A video might help alot

Ok its definitely in the engine. I rechecked the compression this morning and both sides leak down to zero immediately.
