High pitched rattle noise?????
Prodrive 36 just started making a high pitch rattle noise on the top part of the motor, around the shroud area. Cant figure it out, any ideas?
Loading a vid on You Tube and post when vid is ready. Hopefully you can hear it.
Motor appears to run like normal otherwise. No lack of performance.
On vacation, hopefully it will be ok to continue to run it.

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
If I were you Id check the fan/ tower/grass screen bolts for looseness. Go ahead and throw away the grass screen, and cut the tower bolts down to act like a bolt not a tower anymore. No need for it other than to break and take out a lot of wiring.

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
Yes, then the long bolts that the grass screen screwed into.. Remove them one at a time and cut them to the length of a normal bolt head.. then re install into the flywheel/fan

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
Put the brush guard back on after getting rid of the rotating screen and cutting the long bolts. That rotating screen has broken quite a few fans, messed up some wires, and actually had one toss a piece through the brush guard and hit my uncle in the back of his head lol Good thing it wasn't sharp.

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
I had a piece of baffling inside my exhaust break off and bounce around once that sounded very similar.

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
Ok, so after chacking closer it sounds like its coming from muffler. Its a BPS Crossover. Could it be the baffles took a hit?

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
It happened on my motor around 100 hours. I'd imagine that hitting underwater stumps and such could break something loose. I took it to the shop and he verified it. It was the middle of duck season when it happened so I said f'it and kept hunting and after the 5th day the piece finally blew out.

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
The problem with ignoring it on horizontal engines is the possibility it finds its way back into the engine and causes actual damage.

Yeah, think it's called back flow. Wonder if he could do some redneck engineering with a shop-vac and suck it out. I thought about it when I had that problem.

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
It's mainly gravity and bad luck. A piece gets knocked loose, you kill the motor and eliminate the pressure keeping it out of the port. Just by chance the engine stops with the exhaust valve open enough to let it in... you drag your boat down the road, it bounces a little, trash falls in... no harm done, then you turn that key the next time and that's the beginning of the end.
The verticals dont experience this issue because of the gravity factor.
It stands to reason that if a particle of trash happened to be heavy enough that it could possibly find its way past the valve at idle since that would be the time of the least amount of flow and pressure in that port. I'd imagine the most probable time would be after an engine gets shut down and shook up.

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
Pulling the muffler off and getting the loose pieces out is a small effort if it keeps anything from following setx's path into the engine. Even if it means new exhaust gaskets.

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
So no worries driving it? I have been driving it but only 1/2 throttle max being cautious. If part of the baffle broke off can it do additional damage?
Imagine not fixable and need to replace the muffler? Sure got alot of life on this one, installed in 2009.
Thanks for all the input.

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
Read back through. Yes, if that piece of metal finds its way back into the engine, it can cause catastrophic failure of the engine if it falls into the cylinder or gets stuck in a valve. Pull the muffler off, get the broken pieces out, then put muffler back on. Worst case is you have to spend 15-20 bucks on new exhaust gaskets. That's a lot cheaper than a new piston, getting a head repaired, etc.

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
Sorry, should have read the above posts before my last reply. That sucks since im up north WI and no tools. Think i will error on side of caution and not run it till i can work on it back home.
Stupid question since it was mentioned mostly an issue with horizontal engines, but a PD is vertical, no?

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
So i fugured out the issue after it was out of water and its not the muffler. The top half of the clutch is bouncing loose up and down even at idle. Noticed yesterday that the prop is spunning freely. Dont know if the clutch brake broke and if these two issues are tied together????? I dont the think the clutch gas 30 hours on after being replaced last fall. Gotta a call into tbe local dealer that relaced it for me.

Re: High pitched rattle noise?????
That means your whole clutch is loose..... Take it apart and fix it ASAP.
