Post How bad is a patch going to hurt performance?
I put a pretty good size gash in the bottom of my boat last week and the repair shop is saying its best to put a patch over it rather than just welding it up...its a pretty reputable repair shop and airboat builder so I trust that they are right in whats best, just worried about it killing performance...

I dont think insurance would do anything, its a easily reparable damage. And honestly im not even sure if they would still cover it with all the "structural modifications" ive made to it..

I've seen several boats that have had whatever damaged welded up from the outside (after flattening of course) and sanded down, and the "patch" be applied over the damage from the inside. That spot was never seen once the floor was laid back down, very minor to no flaw visible from the outside... it took more time, and was likely more expensive but that's the way I'd repair a boat if I was ever in the position.

Yeah that would be ideal, only problem is the gouge lies right along a stringer...putting a inside patch out of the question.
I asked if they could just put a bead of weld down the gash but they dont want to do that because he said theres a high probability of burning the bottom to the stringer causing issues if/when the bottom flexes. Being why he wanted to just put a solid patch over the whole thing

Updated: pulled the floor out and was able to get a weld inside and out. Good to go with no performance affected

Marine insurance payouts take forever. I have a boat that's been at my shop for a month before they gave me the Go ahead to fix it.. What a Royal PITA.

Ive seen both in here. Some ins companies take care of their customers very well, the last one i did they told him they would not cover anything except for fire or if it sank

It does matter what company you use, and you do have to review your policy and ask questions about what is covered and what is not.....

As to value, stated value policy will help with that.

Boat US is a good place to start.

It was an electrical fire. Re rig the boat, replace EFI harness'... FInally getting progress. Dual rigs are a lot of work to rig!
