Post subject:  Opinions on switching from GTR to HDR

My hull is an Excel 1851 F4

I am considering making the switch from a Stage 2 GTR to an HDR 4400.....

Currently running 32’ish with just me in the boat and 26-28 loaded.

I am tired of my reverse capability and being tied up and turned around to operate. I like the controls on the HDR and have read several posts that the reverse is more powerful.

Am I going to lose performance going from Stage 2 GTR to 4400 HDR? If so, what can I do to the HDR to gain that back.

Has anyone else made the change? Reviews on that?

And yes, I searched, and browser through 20 pages of reviews and mod threads and couldn’t really find the answers I’m looking for.

Last question is EFI vs CDI? What’s the general consensus on the EFI engines? I live in Iowa so it would be nice when ya cold, but I’ve heard I’ll lose low end.....help?

Thanks

Seems to me the only difference in the reverse will be the length of the shaft, the prop, and wether or not you have a reverse plate. Then the older motors have hydraulic rev vs. electric reverse. I have never heard that GTR or mud buddy one better than others, its the same in principle and operation. Its mostly about operator preference. The "best and most powerful reverse" is prodrive. It will back a boat up better in the mud. IMO

The reverse gear ratio's are different, and the thrust angles are different.

What exactly is a stage 2 GTR? What are the specific mods?
