How necessary is flotation. I'm looking into flotation vs no flotation on boats and I hate how flotation takes up a ton of room if also like the piece of my no that I won't sink my boat

It is only a debate here - law states that all personal watercraft
built for interstate sales must have USCG approved floatation.

Loopholes are closing that allow boats with no floatation to protect
public safety. Many states already have bans in place.

You place your friends and family in danger taking them out
in a hull without floatation - simple as that.

You are also buying false security if you think a mud boat with flotation will never sink

I'm looking at 1754 model boats and right now I really can't see the point of flotation it just weighs down the boat and takes up space. Plus I'm never going to accidentally flip a boat as big as a 1754. I could see the merits of floatations in a smaller boat that could be flipped a lot easier

More statistics which show historically your most likey to die from flooding / swamping
in an open boat like a MM rig... Floatation and wearing a PFD are the best way to protect
yourself and your passengers from becoming a statistic...

I am pro choice.

Nice to have you back, dean.. Oh wait, its just Giga. More stats to skew an argument without complete information.

The really sad part about your stats that you ignore is a very large percentage of those boats involved in accidents and deaths from them are in boats that had flotation. Also, one point you ignore, is the open motorboat category includes bass style boats, aluminum fishing boats, and bay boats, etc. Some waterlogged foam, most not, but the stats don't reference that, either. The life jacket is a far more important piece of equipment when it comes to life saving in relation to the stats you posted. Where the stat on how many of those drownings due to submerged boats was a result of not wearing a life jacket. Can flotation make a difference? Sure, in some instances. But really, dude, acknowledgement that in the vast majority of those accidents with deaths and those without, flotation in a life jacket is likely what made the difference, and the boat only helped in a small number of them. I've been on a couple searches where people didn't respect the water, had flotation, and one of those just made the bodies easier to find. The other made no difference. It's the law, and once those exemptions run out, everyone that buys a hull will be buying with it. But don't pretend for one second in anything less than 4 feet of cold ass water that flotation matters like you claim.

Russ,

We participate regularly in the highest risk boating activity - hunting.

We carry larger loads of gear, extra passengers, weapons, and we run our boats
before sunrise in fog and rain across navigation lanes and up rivers to get into
our favorite hunting spots risking hitting submerged floating logs and debris.

It only makes good common sense to take all reasonable safety precautions
especially starting with purchasing a hull that meets legal requirements for
sale and use as a recreational vessel meeting USCG standards.

Floatation and wearing a PFD are the best way to protect yourself and your
passengers from becoming a statistic...

Nope. Wearing a pfd and using proper navigation lighting, and operating at safe speeds for the conditions and yyour awareness are the best way. None of your statistics support your argument other than we can deduce that those boats were easier to recover. Is foam flotation bad? In many applications, nope. If it gets waterlogged and you have no way of monitoring that? Yep, it's now a bad thing. This is not a "change your oil, pmcs" type of thing. This is something the manufacturers put in, is part of the construction of these oh so great hulls, and they need to make sure it's able to drain properly and not soak up water. Some already do.

So what you are saying is that we should all just listen to the government because they have it all figured out....

Good luck with that.

Russ, you are spot on with your comments.

Russ and Caddo, you are both missing the point that ole Giga is trying to get across without exposing himself to much. It is a new year and he needs that free prop and he also wants to have his position under Coco's desk, so he is really trying to say that because Godevil has an approved Coast Guard boat that anything else is just junk. So guys read between the lines and understand what Giga is trying to get across without giving himself away.

Or just get a boat 20' or more and you are not required to have flotation .

You not worry about flotation and make sure every body is wearing a life preserver!!! and keep a couple of those floating seat cushions.

When I had Uncle J build me a 2060, I requested that the floor be sealed and have drain plug, the hunt deck be sealed with a drain plug and the front deck was sealed (minus the top hatch) with drain plug. I didn't want foam that will eventually get water logged. I also have a 2000gph and a 1200gph SPX bilge pumps. I realize that this isn't as safe as say foam as its probably not gonna stay afloat for 24 hours, but it will buy enough time for the bilge pumps to catch up. Lifejackets when hunting/fishing big water and bad weather. We had a couple of hunter die a few years back on the Ohio river when they swamped their boat. They had ripped all the foam out of their jon boat, weren't wearing life jackets and were in a boat that was really too small for that river. They found one of the guys in the intake of the dam. That accident alone is why I have a 2060 boat with floatation, big bilge pumps, hard side blind and wear life jackets. Heck I even added a marine VHF radio with DSC and a 6 foot antenna for when I go down and visit you fine gentleman down south and catch some of your snapper/reds/trout. Dang Yankees!

I think floatation is a waste of space in a surface drive hull. Just wear a PFD.

A boat with flotation doesn't save you if you can't swim to get to it and hang on or climb on it. A boat with flotation doesn't float you face up if you're dazed or knocked out. In fac t, climbing on top of a boat with flotation can cause hypothermia to set in faster than staying in the water and getting to shore to start a fire. It's a false sense of security, and only in the case of a floating boat is easier to find, or when the passengers aren't in their proper pfd, as well as recovering your property, is flotation significantly beneficial over not having it.

got daym I hate that i'm getting into this....

I commercial fish, I don't give a rat's azz about a bunch of recreational dumazzes.
all this flotation bullsheet is just a ploy by 'approved' boat makers like do-devil and the fukin coast guard to get rid of backyard boat builders who make skiffs and flats for people like me.

it's all about the money. I don't give 2 shits if ur wife drowns, bitch should of had on a pfd, and then it's still up to god.

Gia, u need a fukin throat punch. if u want flotation, good for u, but don't ever, for 1 second of your miserable life, think u can tell me what to do.

whatever

I added 'LOL' to this post because I really don't give a crap either way, i'm gonna build my boat like I want too. if I worked for a 'approved flotation boat builder' i'd be sayin the same thing.

If safety is such a big concern, go devils should be banned, the fact that u can’t stop the prop from spinning is the most dangerous motor around

Everyone: I now believe flotation in boats makes you a master duck hunter, just dont forget your banded stickers. Giga convinced me.
