If you have an iPhone you can download the Navionocs app. It works without a signal and even in airplane mode. I was skeptical at first about it but I tested it on a flight offshore to the platform I work on. The platform I work on is 120 miles from shore. It even showed the correct speed that the helicopter was flying. Just so you know, An S92 flies at an average of 155mph.

I like the Navionics app. I also like the OnX maps app. They can both be used without signal.

These apps are both $15-$20 and work after your annual subscription is over. They just don't update the other info you see.

No need to buy a handheld GPS anymore. I use these in AK instead of a GPS nowadays.

FWIW, I've used the garmin 60, 62, 64 for over a decade now. They're all the same unit with progressive upgrades. It's waterproof, easy to carry extra batteries (2 AA), and easier to operate than a touch screen if you've got gloves on or are moving.

While you do have to plan in advance if you want aerial imagery, nationwide topo maps are available for free that contain detailed water borders, elevations, etc. No need for a cell phone signal. I keep it with me and it's there if I need it. Plus I've built a pretty good database of tracks, waypoints, etc. that I can easily keep backed up.

Btw, I've tried the Garmin Oregon and those things suck trying to walk through the woods. Buttons all the way.
