I've got a new 29 on a G3 1652 hull. It runs like a top but I've got performance issues which leave me disappointed sometimes. With 2 guys and gear and dog, I can do about 16 to 17 mph which I'd be satisfied with but sometimes, I just can't get it to get up on step and do any more than 7 to 9 MPH.
If the dog and I are by ourselves and I throw about 50 pounds of lead on the bow, I can get it up to 22 or 23 MPH but that will drop significantly if I don't have the lead on the bow.

I'm considering upgrading to a 36 this year and peddling the 29, Do you guys think the additional horsepower will do the trick. I'm not that unhappy with my current top end speeds, I just need it to get there all the time and not just some of the time.

For what its worth I had a 27 Kohler on my hull and had similar issues to what you are having. It was a great motor, but when I would load the hull down with gear, blind and 1 or 2 other people it would plow sometimes. My damn friends were too fat.

I replaced it with the 36 and it was like night and day. I went from 24-25 max speed with the 27 to 28 with the Briggs 36. I can load it down with gear and two other people and get on step well and still do 23-25 mph depending on conditions. I am much more satisfied with the 36.

The 27 kohler is a great motor, it just needs to be matched carefully with specific hulls.

I would think that the extra horsepower would certainly make a difference, but a hull change might be inorder. to a true flat hull. I know that often budget doesn't allow for that much at once. If i was doing it, I'd spend the cash on a mud motor hull and then upgrade to a bigger motor when I had the money.

But thats just me.

There is no replacement for displacement. If you have the coin, go for the 36 and you will not regret it (like you might if you bought the 29).

When the boats get longer than 16 feet and the loads get bigger than two guys with full gear, the 36 is the only way to go.

Looks like my answer is more horses! I really like the hull I've got. It's a console boat which i converted to a tiller that I can operate seated. Being Fat and old, I shouldn't be standing up anyway!! I think I'll spring for the 36 this summer.

Anyone looking for a 2009, 20" 27 horse with only 25 hours, manual reverse, and camo paint in Northern California?
