Post Case cover dowel pin
Had a mount bolt come loose and busted case bolt head off and snapped a bolt off in the case and busted the right hand dowel pin in two. Got the bolt drilled out in about 2 minutes.

My question is this dowel pin? Do I need to drill out what is left in the block and replace it or roll with only 1 dowel pin? Luckily no case cover cracks like last time. Thanks guys.

You need two dowels. That is what centers your crank. The bolts have so much slop in the holes there is no way they will hold it properly.
You need to get it out and replaced, otherwise you will have another issue down the line.

Sweet, that's what I was thinking just wanted a second opinion ion. Now you wouldn't happen to know the dimensions would you? I'm at work and live 30 min from town, would like to find one in town and then go drill broken piece out. Thank for the help!

Newer blocks have 3. One right above the oil ports. Its just a roll pin. The other 2 are hardened steel dowels.. Its not gonna be fun. Offhand I don't know the sizes

ok thanks. Yeah my block doesn't have the hole for the dowel above the oil port. Just the other two normal positions. I do not think it will be too hard as I just got some really good drill bits, the hardest part will be finding a pin local that will fit! lol

I have had no luck drilling the pins, they are some hard sumbitches. I put a 5/16 nut over the broken pin then weld through the nut down to the broken pin attaching the two. Then tack on a second nut from the outside to attach a slide hammer. Works every time. The pin in block measures just under a 1/4in. I buy 1/4 in pins from fastenall. Then I use a 1/4 in drill bit to touch up holes. Lightly grind a little off the 1/4 drill bit of so the pin will fit snug. This is a good time to convert to a wet gasket. Once all is good and going back together lay engine on its face so this epoxy will flow down to base off bolt. Locktite the ends of bolts as usual. Then you can mix some epoxy and coat the shoulders of the bolts with epoxy as you put bolts in. Once cured the epoxy will work to take the side load beating instead of just the pins. Good luck man

How long are the pins? And the broken section is in the block recessed about 3/16" should be able to tack a bubble up to a nut right? And due to timing I do not have the luxury to go to a wet gasket and be out of commission shopping parts around and such. After season that is a possibility.

What epoxy are you using for the bolts?

3/4 long I think. Clear jb weld in the syringes. Test the drill bit to pin fit in scrap aluminum first. Yes I have stacked a bubble on the Broken pin to bring it up and wash it to the nut. ive only done this as a last ditch all in effort. As the gasket goes away in the future then the bolts become untorqued, so I've only done this while going wetgasket so it all stays locked in tight.

IMO while you have it apart, I would Get the bolt bushing kit from BPS and put them in your block. Takes some of the slop out of the crank case cover. We also went to studs in the block to replace bolts, combination of studs with locking nuts, and bushings seems to help with case gasket failure.

Those hollow bushings he speaks of are a nice addition to a problem case

Would a 1/4" roll pin or spring pin work?

I figured a spring pin would help keep it in line as well as be a little more forgiving than a steel dowel pin with aluminum?
