I run a MB4500BD and i get AVGAS from the local airport, it's $5 per gallon, but it's leaded and no ethanol. However it is 100 octane, but it doesn't hurt powerwise to run it.

Just run VP's SEF (small engine fuel) and you won't have to worry about a thing!! With the direction fuel is going we will all be running can fuel in a few years anyway.

Good info! I've been doing much of what has been suggested on my "glorified lawnmower" mud motor- a 27 HP Kohler LT- and so far so good. My next motor I am hoping will be a 37 HP EFI. How will this new fuel system w/o carburetor change the equation? Will most of our mud motors be EFI in a few years? I've been using Stabil, changing filters and fuel lines yearly, but running 87 octane with no problems (in a 6 gallon plastic tank). Thanks to all!

My 2 cents from lessons learned in the past are to burn ethanol free or Highest octane you can find. I had 3 dirt bikes that had to have the carbs rebuilt due to the "ethanol" eating the gaskets and leaking fuel everywhere. One of the dirt bikes I brought into a mechanic and he said ever since ethanol has been added, he has had more business than he can handle with damages caused by ethanol. He said NEVER use ethanol for small motors. Ever since I had these issues, I have changed all my small engines to ethanol free and have NOT had a problem since. If your burning 87 octane, count your blessings if it hasn't cost you any money for damages. I also am a firm believer in using the freshest gas possible. I will put boat gas that is a few weeks old in my truck and replace it with some fresh stuff.

Well, bought the 26.5 EFI Kohler instead of the 37 Vanguard. Using stabil marine and running 93 octane gas and so far very good. Tried the 87 and noticed there were some hiccups.

From most of the replies I see on here, there is a BIG MISCONCEPTION that maybe is not understood by the boating community. Buying PREMIUM gas does not ensure that the gas is ethanol free. The fuel has to be ETHANOL FREE. Period. Wether it's 87, 89, 92, 93, or whatever octane. So unless the service station, marina, or fuel provider advertises ETHANOL FREE FUEL, it's NOT ethanol free. No matter the octane rating. And where I am from we don't take loaves of bread and put it in our woodstove to heat the house. So why use corn to run our cars. You don't use food for fuel.

I'm getting ready to have a 4400 Black Death put on my new boat. What fuel water separator should I buy for this motor. I was told certain Racor filters are based on the amount of flow the fuel pump is pumping???

Yeah, but add a couple of the 16oz bottles of that fuel you use for radio control nitro cars or planes. It's a heckuva octane boost, but keeps the rings seated better than normal racing fuel.

I run 96 octain ethanol free conoco gas in all my boats and have for years. Never any problems and everything runs great. Sometimes I'll add a little marvel mystery oil to my fuel as well.

Running ethanol free fuel is always a good idea, but running high octane in a stock motor is a complete waste of money. It does nothing to increase performance or longevity.

I always have run premium in my boats and performance cars we run. Don't know if it's just a habit or what, but I've never had issues so imma continue the activity lol
