Correct....and in the mudmotor application belts ARE more durable than gears.

Either way a belt is cheaper and easier to replace

Re: gear vs belt driven motor (pro drive and go devil)
So how often or how many PD's broke gears? If so, what happened?
Over 300 on mines, original gears...

Re: gear vs belt driven motor (pro drive and go devil)
Gears rust so anytime you get salt water in that lower unit the next thing you better be doing is tearing it apart. put salt water on gears, gears rust, gears fall apart, put salt water on rubber belt, belt stays the same, keep driving motor. Of course gears will take a while but they will fail in continous salt water applications. thats what happened to my buddies lower, the housing cracked and slowly leaked salt water in the caseing

Re: gear vs belt driven motor (pro drive and go devil)
So did it fail from having salt water and corrosion, or did it fail from not having any fucking oil in the housing?

Re: gear vs belt driven motor (pro drive and go devil)
You too huh......had a small crack and was leaking water and he didn't know and finally it screwd up and when he pulled the lower and opened it up there was metal teeth all inside the case and rusted to hell, not a single sign it was fixing to happen it just happened. So 800 later he upgraded the lower

Re: gear vs belt driven motor (pro drive and go devil)
I'm sure it was rusted, because it was full of salt water and not oil.

Re: gear vs belt driven motor (pro drive and go devil)
Gears...I've knocked the hell out of quite a few rocks at WOT and don't have an issue with the gears. (To the point I will be tacking on another aluminum roll before long on the bottom of the skeg) I've seen a PD gear set lock up but it was due to poor maintenance and had water in the housing. I believe if you keep the oil clean and full, the gears they have now will last as long as you want to run it. Yes, PD undersized them in the beginning but it's not an issue now. Go to a pulp wood plant and check out a tube grinder, this thing pulverizes anything you put in it and has a very similar gear set up. Gears are meant to be tougher but you gotta maintain the oil. In reality gears aren't meant to touch at all, they ride on the cushion of the oil. When that cushion is removed is when you have problems.
No comment on belts.

Re: gear vs belt driven motor (pro drive and go devil)
Test drive a pro drive and a gator tail and YOU make the decision. Although my pd is kinda new its never seen fresh water and neither has my buddy's his has a few hundred hours and they hold up as good as any other motor.
Do regular Maintenance on what ever motor you buy gt,gd,pd or mb and they will last a very long time

I haven't seen a belt driven mud motor with full power reverse so I could care less about a belt or a motor that can't get out of the shit it gets into just saying
