 Electrical question
I have a 29GTR...Question is this...with the engine running if you disconnect the battery cables should the engine die? I thought the stator would produce enough to run the engine without a battery.
Second question...can you install the marine charging system on an older engine?

 Re: Electrical question
1. no it should not die
2.yes but it would probably be expensive. Check with a briggs dealer

 Re: Electrical question
1. Yes, they will die with no battery power. Something about the fuel solenoid or oil something...Either way, I do not believe it will run without battery power unless you bypass something.
2. The stator bolts up differently. You will have to drill and tap the block to fit the new stator. You better have a steady hand, or good luck finding someone to do it for you...

 Re: Electrical question
Does someone have a method of testing if the charging system is functioning? Last night my battery died and thank god a brought my charger in the boat with me or I still would be push pollin.

 Re: Electrical question
With the motor running over 2000 rpms, you should be showing somewhere between 13.6-14.4 volts at the battery. It won't be charging while you idle around for bowfishing.

 Re: Electrical question
That's the way I understand it. I believe the cdi's have some output at idle, but not the older style. It shouldn't be drawing enough current to kill your battery though, unless you are running lights off the same battery...

 Re: Electrical question
the cdi's are 20 amps at idle. it jumps to 50 at a certain rpm, but not sure what rpm it is.

 Re: Electrical question
I am not running any full time lights off the battery. Just a deck light to deal with fish when the need arises and my GPS. I need to get a puller to get the flywheel off. I ran it up to 3k and no change in voltage at the battery so I guess it is fried. reg and alt is 150 from BS so might as well just change them out.

 Re: Electrical question
i am having the same problem, its probably not the charger they hardly ever go out according to hoyt. first the little plastic plug with two yellow and a red coming out of it cut that off and put butt splices. second someone told me to cut the red wire of the plug and connect it straight to the hot on the starter selanoid

 Re: Electrical question
Garrett I do have an electrical connector on the bottom of the carb and when i pull the cable from the battery it will run a couple seconds then die...like it runs out of fuel. I will take a look at the connector...did not think about that one, thanks Me and my boy ended up taking off the belt and clutch assembly(man those bolts were a MF to break loose) while we were working on it today so now my wheels are turning about just installing a cam while I have it down this far and change the belt out.

 Re: Electrical question
what voltage comes out of the alt...and also what is the purpose of the regulator? I assume it regulates the voltage but does anyone know some numbers that I can check with a voltmeter.

 Re: Electrical question
Your voltage won't change when the engine is running. The charger should be producing about 14 volts. The battery will b a little over 13. if you r getting over 14 volts when it is running, u r charging.

 Re: Electrical question
The stator should be putting out anywhere from high 30s to 40+ AC volts and the rectifier/voltage regulator converts that to 13 to 14 DC volts. My pigtail shorted out and caught fire so i had to hard wire it back in ( did away with the pigtail and wire crimped the wires together), works great now. also with the big blocks it takes 12 volts to excite the rectifier so the motor will die if the 12volt power source is lost. For instance I have a Mukuni carb ( no fuel shut down solenoid ) and my motor will die everytime I disconnect the battery.

 Re: Electrical question
No i need to install the clutch and reverse on the back end and then recheck it with a meter. I have always wanted to know how the clutch assembly worked so I took it apart. While GT might have great CS they aint going to get my butt out the marsh in the middle of the night so I better know how to work on this thing.

 Re: Electrical question
put everything back together today and I am reading up to 29v ac from the two yellow wired coming from the alt.. I cranked it up to around 4000rpm but could only get 29v ac. Is the alt still good? Looks like the regulator is dead for sure just not sure of the alt is ok at 29v

 Re: Electrical question
My wiring harness plastic connector was bad on my old motor. Sometimes it was charging, sometimes it wasn't. Before spending ya $$ on a stator or a regulator, try cutting out the plastic plugs & butt splicing the wires together.

 Re: Electrical question
hey before u order the rectifer undo the red wire comin out of the ur rectifer and go straight to the positive side of ur battery or to the hot wire on ur starter and then check the volts at ur battery cause that red wire feeds back to the key switch then back to ur hot side and i have seen that fix ur problem every time i ran in to a charging problem!!!!

 Re: Electrical question
thanks guys i will check those two ideas out tomorrow. That red wire should read 13-14ish vdc while charging correct?
