Check your electrical connections at the battery and the starter. Probably a loose wire or a build up of corrosion. Make sure you give them a good tug as the connections could be loose inside the terminals. |

ok ya ill check that out. i hope thats all it is. is there any way that the part that wont let it start unless its out of the water could be bad? idk i had this motor on a 14' john boat and it had a problem starting unless it was at a certain angle. thought that had to do with it not sitting right on the transom. But i just put the motor on a gator trax rogue and it wnt even try to turn over. |

The mercury switch? It would be easy to bypass so you could rule that out if needed. Sounds like the solenoid is clicking from what you said in your first post. I believe the mercury switch would keep that from happening. Sounds to me like a bad battery or a bad connection. Your getting enough juice to open the solenoid, just don't have enough to turn the starter. I'd check all your connections first. |

Not the mercury switch when that goes bad it does nothing no clicks. Either starter is bad or bad electrical connection mine is battery cable needs to be cleaned every so often. And i would by pass the switch it has solved alot of headaches for me |

That would be the switch. Just unplug the wires and create a jumper for the connections to run power through |

Unless you've sunk the motor, I doubt you need to replace the starter. They just don't die very often. Have you checked your connections yet? Start with the simple stuff, don't get excited and start repairing and replacing things that weren't broken in the first place. |
