Re: Mud Buddy's new Motor with reverse
People are most likely doubting this new MM, not because of the MM itself but because of someone who is associated with it being like this song. Care to guess who it is? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luKmSLXukaw

You feel a belt drive is tougher & more durable than gears?

Re: Mud Buddy's new Motor with reverse
There's a lot of guys in NE TX, NW LA running PD's in some of the most stumpy water in the country. How do you guys like having gears versus belts???

Re: Mud Buddy's new Motor with reverse
i don't mind the gears at all. I have had a MB and it def. will get the job done as well. My boat runs out real well with the pro drive. For the most part I don't play too much in nasty mud and stump fields, but the MM deal gives me a lot of peace of mind if I am on the way to the blind and hit a submerged sandbar, log, rock, etc. It does seem a little much to have to be running 2 sets of gears between power head and prop, though.

Re: Mud Buddy's new Motor with reverse
I think the issue with the belt comes in due to improper tensioning....or lack of it. Sometimes crap happens tho.

Mud Buddy's new Motor with reverse
I run heavy vegetation and stumps with the occasional mud flat and in 470 hours no problems with the gears on my pd. Can't speak on the belts personally.

Re: Mud Buddy's new Motor with reverse
Belt technology is a proven means of power transmission. Take a look at farm equipment, hay mowers, combines, planters, etc. All have been using this for years. I like the fact that the belt takes the hit not a direct shock to the motor as was the case when I owned a long tail mud motor.

Re: Mud Buddy's new Motor with reverse
As an old wore out outboard mechanic, I can say that I know a bit about how the gears in outboard lower units damage due to impact. It ain't pretty when a piece gets chipped off cause it spreads throughout the entire gear system. Not only does it ruin "most" of the gears, but the shavings also get inside just about every bearing as well. The bearing surfaces get roughened and there you go....a complete lower unit overhaul. Now if your application is to run open water the majority of time with little or few risks of hitting rocks or stumps, then a gear driven system is fantastic. I got a buddy with a pro-drive and he has gone through 4 different lower unit rebuilds due to hitting stumps in our lake. One time the drive shaft broke just above the pinion gear. When that happened, the engine had zero load torque and it wound up really high RPM before he could shut it down. The engine threw a rod about 4 weeks later...might not have been related but it could have been due to the high RPM.
With a belt driven system, I know there is enough shock absorption to help keep drive shafts from breaking as they would with a direct drive. Belts are way less expensive to replace too. If the mud motor props had a rubber hub, that could help eliminate some of the problems with gears, hence why outboard props have rubber hubs.
Just my thoughts, Curl

Mud Buddy's new Motor with reverse
Curl, It's amazin dat da clutch didnt give afore da drive shaft broke. Also, sounds like da rev limiter was set, or not set at all fer dat matter, way too high. If da shaft broke its as though da motor were in neutral and it shouldn't rev over a safe amount of rpms.
Here's another thought. If da gear drives are dat common to have issues, den why don't da direct drive long tails n such snap drive shafts too?
Just food fer thought.

That MB has a setup similar to a merc outdrive with a cone clutch vs dog teeth. to engage Fwd, N, Rev.

Re: Mud Buddy's new Motor with reverse
Theres always gonna be some people that just get lemon motors. Ive prolly put 400 hours on PD's in that particular lake without any problems with my gears, and I dont idle anywhere.

Re: Mud Buddy's new Motor with reverse
I honestly think that if owners of the new MB will just not "try" to tear it up, it will last as long as it is supposed too. Anything, regardless of brand or type, can be subjected to enough improper use to get tore up. I am really happy to see MB have a reverse offering now. Real interested to see how it progresses and its durability. Good marketing strategy as well to emulate the Merc gear system. Guys should not have major issues unless they just push too hard. And yes Sir, my buddy has tightened up the loose nut. He thought they were indestructible for awhile. Don't think it was a lemon on his part. He is just mean on a engine.

That is why MB has options. You want a belt drive get a Hyper. You want gears get a Sport V or H. Problem solved. I've heard of some people that have issues with their PD lower units but it is RARE. Usually due to driving like a mad man.

Re: Mud Buddy's new Motor with reverse
Year before last I was running around in a green skiff, and this past year I didnt have a boat, so I was a tag along. There isnt a good way to get to the west end quickly, it's best to just suck it up and get up earlier and go out on the lake and take the poles. lol I hope you are getting a 3/1ths bottom on your new boat.[/quote] 17x52 w/ 3/16" hull & longitudinal ribs spaced about every 7"-8". I ought to have no problems. Even though this rig will be capable of running from the river through the gap and out past Snake Creek on out to Bagley's area or even over toward Cottonshed, I don't think I have the Kahoonas to do so on plane. Sorry for hijacking this thread but I did post some comments on the MB reverse stuff.... I'll put up a new post when I get my new boat finished with pictures and performance readings. Curl

Re: Mud Buddy's new Motor with reverse
never seen or had a pd lower unit go down....not that it dosent happen. I run some stump filled lakes but do it cautiously. Now running across bessie heights, I have hit concrete and pipelines at wot and its ripped the tiller from my hand and hit me in the leg (in the thigh and it hurts like a mofo...deadleg feeling). I have chips in my prop from stumps and the other stuff and my clutch is still good and my lower unit is fine. however, when i get a new rig it will be a gtrrrrrrrrr not that I dont like my pd because I would stick with the pd if they were more willing to improve their product but they are not so gtr is my choice. As for the instant reverse mb.....sounds like it would make a good brake for pulling up to ramp but it aint gonna pull you off floating veggie, fpr can barely get that job done. It will be good for the mud when you are temporarily immobile to get a ditch dug....maybe.

Gtr will not pull in reverse like the Prodrive but if Prodrive dosent change angle and add length to shaft I will be getting a gtr..
