Post The next "big thing" in Mud Motors..
Anyone know for sure,,,,

Looks like the next big thing is the Robin/Subaru motor?....

Is that it? Please tell me they have an engine that can perform like a 1000cc engine should, and hold together while doing so...

Does the Robin/Subaru plan on taking on the "big block" world? Maybe fuel injected to???

Ever hear of a "trout lake 25". Take a 35 outboard and put the 25 covers on it. If the 30 is the same as the smaller motor, buy the smaller motor and build it into the 30.

Attached is the tag you will see on the 23 kholer on my mower. Again, i didnt know for sure but this is what the "mechanic" at the shop i bought mines at!!! Not arguing with you, as im no kholer expert. But what i was told made a little since to me, he even ran both mowers and showed me how much quieter the 20hp was over my 23hp. Totally different mowers, he claimed same engine just huge muffler on the other knocked it down to 20hp from 23... :?:

I dunno man. Is yours a command series? The only command series engines(which is what pd uses) listed at 725 cc's are the 25 and 27 hp motors.

That is a courage series, they do show the 20-27 to all be the 725 cc's, but don't have a 30hp model. I haven't messed with those, and don't know what they changed between models on them. The bore and stroke appear to be the same, but the blocks have different dimensions than the 25-30 commands. Gonna assume those are totally different motors.

On the commands, which is what pd uses, the differences between models are listed above.

what sparks my curiosity, is im pretty sure this robin/subaru has been out a while! they used to have them installed in plenty mud boats around our parts. Not sure whats the fuss about, im sure its much more power over the 23briggs, but what i was saying is how much more than the kholer can it be....

Seems like a lot of fuss over something just cause its new? Or just because the 23 was all that was available before...

Does the EFI change the performance for the better by much"?

Does a much better job mixing the fuel and air. Faster start ups, don't really need to warm up, much more responsive than a carb, should be more fuel efficient.
You can check stualaska's write up on the efi kohler, and that should give you some kind of an idea on the differences. He was happy with it.

Well I understand the advantages, but is it really that much more performance? as in speed, torque, load carrying, etc.

It cannot perform much better then a finely tuned carb so no! I'm pretty sure it's a pretty basic efi system and notthing like on an automobile...so my guess is starts better, better fuel economy,,etc. biggest difference maker is on how bad was the carb on it dialed in...

I wonder how much mods will wake these things up? Just thought about it... Think the power commander would fit on one? (chip for the efi fourwheelers)

I can't resist it. I've got to put in my two cents.
I've run the Kohler 29hp EFI all summer. I'm sold on it for several reasons. Yesterday at 16 degrees F it made two full revolutions and started and idled at 950 rpm. I let it warm up at idle while I got the boat ready and it never missed a beat. The fuel economy is much better than the 27hp. Kohler advertises 27%, but I would guess 20-25%. It runs much smoother at all rpm's and never loads up in idle. The only negative I have is it doesn't push as big a load as the 35hp Briggs, but that shouldn't surprise anyone since it has almost 250 cc's less displacement. The Robin and Kawasaki engines with EFI are very close to the Kohler in displacement but they are both open loop systems as opposed to the Kohler closed loop. Early automotive EFI's were open loop which in my opinion are just good carbs. The closed loop has an oxygen sensor in the exhaust which tells the ECU how much to adjust the amount of fuel to inject based on the exhaust gas mixture. This is in addition to the other sensors such as intake air temp, oil temp and air density. I don't know where the injectors are on the Kawasaki, but the Robin has them in the throttle body. The Kohler uses port injection which gives a better mixture at the head of the valve. I've asked Kohler, several times, when they are going to sell the 999 cc with EFI and their standard answer is about a year. The fact is, that if they don't have an OEM manufacturer with a large enough demand we'll never see it. Mud motors do not produce large enough demand. I've heard rumors for years that Briggs is working on EFI, but I don't know what type or which engine. Bottom line is I think EFI is way better than a carb for my application and after running it for a year wish the big Briggs or Kohler had it. I've got a 993 Briggs with 65 hours on it. Maybe I should use the long, dark winter to convert it to closed loop EFI.
