Post Mudbuddy 45 mag problem
Have a buddy that just bought a new boat with dual 45 mags. Brand new with less then 30 minutes run time. Finally got on the lake earlier and the first motor cranked right up while the second motor took a little more to start, but it finally did. When getting on plane the first motor ran good while the second motor started making a horrible knocking noise. Sounded like someone dumped marbles into the cylinder and let it run. We immediately killed that one and limped back to ramp. On the way in the first motor started making a noise as well while under load. Almost sounded like bbs pinging around in the cylinders. Do the 45 mags require a higher octane fuel such as 93 versus 87?

Also, when he got home he cranked up the second motor that was making the knocking noise and it fired right up and sounded good. He came back 30 minutes later and started it and it started knocking again. Any idea what that could be? I am not a motor guru, but do have a pretty good understanding how everything works. Thanks in advance.

You should be running high octane fuel.

Check the valve lash on both motors.

This sounds like a fuel delivery problem. The pinging noise you heard, the BB's, sounds to me like your motors are detonating from an overly lean condition. I would check your plugs to see what they look like to confirm. I am assuming though you still have the stock carb, so others may be able to chime in to help figure it out. But if it is brand new, I would be on the phone with Micah first thing in the AM.

My buddy is going to call first thing in the morning. I wanted to check the spark plugs but he didn't have any tools in his boat. I will get him to pull the plugs and send me a picture.

Long story short...my buddy took the boat back to manufacture and they went threw to see what the hell was wrong. The motor with the back knocking noise had a dropped valve and the the other motor threw a rod while they were making sure everything was ok on it before he went home. He said he's up and running good now.

Got the full story now...the motor with the dropped valve had the valve head snapped off at the stem and was just laying on top of the piston and somehow didn't scar anything up inside. The other motor had a push rod come unseated while test driving after the other motor was fixed. The manufacture that made the boat basically redid his valve train on both motors before he went home. He got screwed at first due to boat leaving without final inspection, but they did everything possible to make good after he had to drive 7hrs to get there. We took boat out earlier to run it and she ran good.

Oh, the problems above we're blamed on the motor not being broken in...don't know if I believe that or not. Sounds like it was rushed together on a Friday afternoon just before closing time.

I find it very hard to believe as well. I'm just relaying what my buddy told me, he was there when they tore into the engines. Maybe the mechanic was blowing smoke up his ass, but I want there to see. I will be curious to see if these motors have any further problems.

I'd be willing to bet he blew smoke up his ass, A dropped valve is not good inside a cylinder head. I would definitly get a second opinion, becasue if something is wrong and they told him its ok, that one wrong may leave him stranded. Hope all is well though, New rig, shouldn't be having those kinds of problems. Technically break in on these motors is done when the motor is built. When you get it you put gas in it and go.

Post Re: Mudbuddy 45 mag problem
hopefully ur friend can post up pics of no damage. on the engine with dropped valve. i like others say b.s. On that engine i would have demanded a replacement engine. there is something to say about breaking in a engine. mostly just not lugging it. and a oil change within a few hours of use other than that. vary ur rpms than run it like u stole it. why they offer that build with out a valve up grade makes no sense. all their proformance builds should include stock size stainless valves. i would have thought that d.p. would have checked valve lash before it left.
