Post GTR 35 REBUILD (PICS)
Getting ready to get my second motor built for my dual rig I will be ordering this season.
Not many build topics on here any more so I figured I would start one.
I started my rebuild yesterday. I coated this engine in oil and PB blaster in the fall hoping that it would soften things up a bit. So far I have been met with lots of rust and aluminum oxidation problems. What a nightmare getting some of these bolts out was...This engine only has 115 hours on it but I think the guy who owned it must have left it uncovered for a long time.
I plan to build this motor to the same specs of my motor I am currently running. I got this motor for a good price so a few grand and I should have it up and running like new. Hopefully saving me a few bucks in the long run.

So Far Junk Parts Are:
Carb
Coils
Stator
Ignition
Most of the wiring

Good usable parts:
Block
Case
Exhaust
Planitary Gear
Lower unit
Heads
Prop
Air Cleaner Cover
Plastic
Reverse Caliper

Heres what I started with:

Pressure washed everything and got most of the grease and oil off of the motor.

My cheap rust remover device from the toy store.

Works great

The only thing I will be spraying on them is cutting fluid when I am running a carbide end mill down through the center of them....lol

I was super pissed when I snapped them off but I tried everything and that aluminum oxidation just had them in there something fierce.. I'm gona try and weld a washer then a nut to the top of them and get them out again before consulting the bridgeport....

Just realized that your stator / flywheel bearing was damaged. You can buy those! Just not for the crank case.

Bought this one for my vert a while back.

Just had to buy a new crank case cover because I scratched the bearing pretty bad taking it off. The covers are $342.
YIKES!!!! :o
That sure was a kick where it hurts!

Post Re: GTR 35 REBUILD (PICS)
Got everything Cleaned up. Replaced the lower seal that was blown out my the previous owner. Never ceased the shit out of everything. New grease in the lower unit. Never had to remove the lower seal before but I can tell you this much keep your fingers out from behind that pully when you run the impact gun on that taperlock bushing....holy shit did that hurt! Pressure washed everything and got most of the grease off of the motor and parts pressure washed the belt to get the grease off of it while I was at it. I went over the lower unit every bolt and found some to be loose so I tightened as necessary.

The one thing that surprised me is that this unit has not grease fittings. That shows it age. It is #479 motor. I will install grease fittings at various places. Getting this trim unit off was quite a chore....ended up using a 10 ton press to press the old bolts out. Aluminum oxidation....what a pain...never cease is my new best friend.

Fixed my broken bolts.

What a mess this was to clean out....

This is a good video for reference of removing that taper-lock bushing. NO BULLSHIT you need some manly snap-ring pliers. I broke my little sissy snap ring pliers and ended up making a pair out of some nails and an old pair of pliers...and no I'm not showing a picture of that....

Cool thread.

As far as a rust buster/corrosion penetrator goes, I've tried a lot of different products and haven't found anything better than ACF-50. Not sure if you're already past the tear down phase, but it's still handy to have on the shelf.

Well Id have say false. There shit stays in the salt air and spray for 24-7-365. I'd say they use it for a reason. Your lil mm rust to shit within one season of minimal salt use.

BTW money is no object for the oil field.

We use kroil at the plant too. It's good shit, PB blaster is good stuff too. 50/50 mix of acetone and transmission fluid works like a champ too.

CRC Knock'r Loose is the same thing as Kroil. As soon as Aero Kroil's patent ran out CRC came out with the same formula. Much cheaper.

I bought 5 gallons if this stuff. I will show before and after pictures of how it works. It has great reviews all over the internet.

If I owned a sandblaster I wouldn't even bother with this stuff but I dont so this is worth a shot to me.

The best thing I found for rust, as far as soaking something is kings ford lighter fluid. It will take every speck of rust off the rustiest whatever u have If u submerge it for a day. I'm talking brand new..except for the pitting

Got shipped out on pipeline job for now. I have everything except for my heads and my carb and new rings. I'm on the fence about replacing the origional hydraulic trim unit while I am at it. These older style trim units really suck...I have constant problems with mine.

At least i'm making some money to pay for all of the upgrades. I sure wish I hadnt paid so much for the motor used. I had to replace and re-work and clean every single nut and bolt on this motor. Right now I am more focused on making sure my existing motor is running good because I am going to Virginia to shoot stingrays for a 5 days to shoot stingrays. I replaced the belt on my 2008 motor with a belt from my old 2006 motor and it seems super tight and I am getting a whine from the belt. This is with no shims. I am going to take that belt off and put one of the brand new belts I got from calen on the motor.
