Gotta put together a muffler now and can"t make up my mind what I want it to look like. I think I'm gonna make it with two outlets but just can't make up my mind yet. Normally I only say this to girls but, "Show me your exhaust". |

Hard for something to rust that a magnet won't stick too |

Build it out of a duplex stainless like 2205 and it won't rust even in salt water |

Rule of thumb from what I have always heard the higher the grade stainless the less mag. Draw it has so therefore mag won't stick. But never had an earth magnet. Normal use not including harsh chemicals won't make 304 rust or rot compared to the 400 series which is more corrosive resistant thin mild steel. But I was to vague in my comment. |

A lot of people don't know that stainless steel is actually rust resistant rather than totally rust proof, and can be damaged very easily by exposure to direct heat at high temperatures like in an exhaust system. Its actually an iron alloy that contains a minimum of 11.5 wt% chromium (which gives it that nice shine), but the carbon is what really gives it strength and the resistance to rust /or staining. The 304 when exposed to high temperatures is more susceptible to oxidation and color change. |

The more carbon the more likely to rust. The molybdenum (MO) also referred to as moly the more corrosion resistance hence why I said a duplex 2205 which isn't much more expensive than 316 will hold up much much longer in a basic (saltwater ph ~ 8) environment and is twice as strong and 316 stainless. |
