I was going along and the motor died. I got it cranked back up and it had no power in the water (2600 rpm's) but could pull the motor up and would hit 4300 oow. I drained all the gas and put new, thinking it might have been bad gas. Anybody know what might be the problem?

Pull valve covers & check see if popped a push rod out

Assuming the tank vent is open, huh?

Pulled valve covers today, all is well... I cleaned the carb and took to the lake, and still bogging down. I didn't notice this yesterday, but in reverse the rpm's are up fine. When in forward it idles up like its fine and then just bogs down??

Check to see if you have spark on the plug that the tach wire isn't wrapped around

Check the wires coming from clutch for chafing. If it only does this in fwd, then you most likely have a short somewhere between clutch & switch.

Since last post I have checked everything mentioned and Pete changed the coils. i also called gator tail, and they said it sounds like it was only firing on one cylinder. I took it to a Briggs mechanic on Friday where he cleaned the carb again. He said it was firing on both cylinders but he thinks there is a diode in the wiring harness that runs from each cylinder that might have went out. He wasn't 100% that it has a diode? He said whatever it was is causing the cylinders to be out of time with each other. And btw I changed the spark plugs too just to be sure.

If its a new motor, leave it with briggs dealer till its fixed. Sounds like a B&S warranty issue unless it is coming from clutch wiring like mentioned earlier.

Yea it is a brand new motor and is under warranty, I'm just trying to do what I can to keep from having to send the motor to gator tail. I talked to gt and they said no problem they would fix it, but just curious are they quick to fix warranty work?

Pull a plug wire and crank it. If it runs, plug that one back in and pull the other, crank it, if it runs, its firing on both cylinders, if not....post up and we'll go from there. Easy to tell if both are firing.

That doesn't always work. If he has a blown head gasket, it would still fire on both sides, but not run on the side with blown gasket. That's why I said leak down test.

Just a 2 minute easy check that anyone can do to help further the diagnosis... I agree with a blown gasket but could be more simple.

Did you roll the motor over with the valve covers off to make sure you have full travel on the valves? Could have rounded a cam lobe..

I talked to Hoyt today and he said he had to put a new carb on it and the fuel filter came into pieces Somehow... Anyways back in business. Gator tail has awesome customer service too btw the motor was dropped off Monday afternoon and it was fixed today, cant beat that!!

Mine did the same thing today it was running fine then all of a sudden it boggs down when its out of the water runs fine. Fuel pump is pumping plenty of fuel took spark plugs out one side sound way different than the other with the plug removed like the timing is off, i hope its just a value. You can also put your hand on one side of the exhaust it it doesn't get hot for a while but the other side is hot instantly.

It was the carb, Hoyt put a new carb on mine and he said it could've been an issue from the get go because after the new carb it seems to have more low end and gets on step quicker

Brought mine to the shop this morning just got it back broke one push rod and bent another one.

Post subject:  Re: GTR bogging down

Push rods don't just bend & break unless something is wrong. What caused it?

Hit a pipe on the lake yesterday and lost a cylinder, Brought it in this morning and he said the stage ones sometime have the rod disconnect or bend, runs great now.
