Anyone know If the Napa gold 1348 is ok? It's what I use on both my motors, I like it because it's tall and has more filter area. But Ill swap if it doesn't have the check valve I guess

Maybe this is the filter you cut open baron? I just assumed it was the1056 from the first post In this thread.

mine was the 1394, a little skinnier than the 1348? the 1394 is easy to install on the tight quarters of my zero turn.

But I think all those short fat filters are probably manufactured the same if not with the same pieces.

The first link is the wix cross of the napa filter you use and the specs and the second is the napa filter specs. The napa filter doesn't say if it has an anti drainback valve but the wix it crosses to does but they are both fine to run imo.

I don't think the base line or cheap 1348 would be the same as the gold filter but it is still cheaper than a B/S filter

I believe Wix is the supplier of Napa filters.

so does the wix and napa 1056 have the check valve?

Another filter I have used is a prime. Pof 241, crosses with the Napa gold 1348, also has the anti drain back valve

OK without being accused of over thinking it - why do the filters "designed" for these engines have one larger inlet hole?

Sorry for jumping in the thread a little late but have a few questions.

I'm confused about the check valve comments.

If the filter has a check valve on the flow in side then It will only allow oil to flow iin or if reversed not allow flow to flow into filter at all. So neither of those are really an option as the flow in would serve no purpose on the incoming side.

If the filter had a check valve on the discharge side it would not allow oil to flow out if placed in the direction that would hold oil in filter after shut down or if turned around it would allow oil to flow freely through it. Keep in mind if it is a valve that holds oil in filter until certain amount of pressure is built then allows it to flow then that would make it a pressure relief valve not check valve.

From the dissected view of the filter above it appears the spring is holding a "rubber/metal" sealing surface against a seat. If the oil filter element is clogged the the oil pressure will over come the reistance of the spring allowing oil to bypass the filter element and maintain Integrity of the lubrication system.

FYI. I've used the longer filters thinking more filter element is better. In the end it was sticking out to far and would get struck by tree limbs and such and bend end of filter. Made decision to swap back to shorter filter for clearance issues and as long as you change your filter within X amount of hours it's all good. Your engine should have a oil pressure switch connected to the ignition that will shut engine down if no oil pressure (However many people bypass this switch with the thought process it is causing cold start issues).

It's not a (check valve) its suppose to be a bypass that if the filter element gets to clogged up it will bypass the element and still flow oil.

I know im way late on this. But the colored piece behind the small holes is an anti drain back. Usually a type of silicone/rubber that acts like a clapper valve. Oil actually goes through the small holes, then the outside of the filter. The large center hole is the exit back into the motor with clean oil. When the motor stops pumping oil the silicone/rubber valve kind of lays agaisnt the small inlet holes keeping oil in the filter for the next start up. The spring you can see in some filters is the pressure relief. So if your filter is ever cloged it will over come the spring pressure and continue to give the motor oil. Dirty oil is better than no oil i guess. All filters i know of have this spring, some are just designed way different and some cant be seen from the outside. Some are on the head of the filter element between the actually can part/outside case of the filter and the filter itself. Some are shitty stamped steal not even a spring, that act like a spring(fram). Regular fram filters are garbage. Less filter material, cardboard caps instead of metal.
