I've got a 1750 gator trax with 35 mud buddy with cam, rockers, carb, exhaust. Like title says when I get to 1/4 throttle I'm running 4500 rpm. I've taking carb apart and can't see anything out of place. I've been having a problem with it pushing the boat. With 3 people it struggles to get on plane but a few months back ran perfect and could do 26 with 3 people and gear. I've replaced clutch also thinkin it was slipping and that helped a little bit but not much..I'm lost on what it is

Measure your prop. Sounds like a worn prop.

I've swapped props both were used but the same thing. Even in my. Garage running the motor with prop spinning it hits 4500 rpm at between 1/8 and 1/4 throttle

It will do that ooh with no load on it.

Measure it from tip to tip.

It didn't used to do this. Used to run perfect. I have 38/48 gearing

prop must be worn as all hell, don't understand how u are hitting 4500 at just quarter throttle. u say u used to hit 30.....have u adjusted anything else? If not it must be the prop

I've tried re adjusting the air/fuel screw and idle. Even in my garage with the prop spinning it will hit 4500 rpm at 1/8 - 1/4 throttle

Post subject:  Re: Motor hits rev limiter at 1/4 throttle???

So will mine or any other motor will do that with a mikuni. There is no load on the motor when it's out of water. Check your PROP I bet it is close to 11.5" or less.

It's not the prop if it doing it in the garage. What is your idle at? ~900-1100??

Author:  Seand717 [ Fri Nov 29, 2013 9:06 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Motor hits rev limiter at 1/4 throttle???

Yea idle is 900-1100. I've tried turning idle down and adjusting air screw and other way around. It was running lean as my plugs were brown and dry and exhaust would glow so I raised the jet but this didn't affect the 1/4 throttle problem

When u open at 1/4 throttle and hitting limiter is your carb slide open all the way?

Author:  Gameover [ Fri Nov 29, 2013 9:13 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Motor hits rev limiter at 1/4 throttle???

If so u may have cable adjusted to tight and leaning out motor big time just to get idle back down.

Post subject:  Re: Motor hits rev limiter at 1/4 throttle???

No slide is only opened 1/4 with throttle. The cable is adjusted out as much as it can

if it's not the prop, then maybe the clutch is messed up, even tho I haven't seen one really slip, they normally just mess up, and break.

I just put a new clutch on it..

Post subject:  Re: Motor hits rev limiter at 1/4 throttle???

its the prop i bet money... you got two used props that are the same size. I got two used props that are the same size too both wore the flock out. I put one of them on when the river was low to save my new one. I could barely get on a plane had to go 1/4 throttle as well and was running slow annnnddd was hitting my rev limiter every time I applied a lilttle gas. The rev limiter only shuts you off when it sees rpms over what they are rated for but that doesnt mean you wont spin that wore up prop to well over what you should be before the rev limiter catches you. Be careful not to throw a rod doing that it can happen.

Put a new prop on it and it will be fine!
Seen this exact scenario more than once

It does this in my driveway also. Not just in the water. With no load on it the carb only opens 1/8-1/4 way and it's at 4500 Rpms.

If you ease on the throttle really slow it will hit 5k at 1/8-1/4 throttle?

Post subject:  Re: Motor hits rev limiter at 1/4 throttle???

I've talked to mud buddy and a few different places and they all said it shouldn't do this

Post subject:  Re: Motor hits rev limiter at 1/4 throttle???

With no load, the motor will hit 4-5k at less than 1/4 throttle. That is normal.

Post subject:  Re: Motor hits rev limiter at 1/4 throttle???

Well shit. Would it cause it to act exactly the same in the water? No motor what trim the motor is at it won't go passed 1/4 throttle , won't push the boat and have lost 6 mph

Post subject:  Re: Motor hits rev limiter at 1/4 throttle???

Hell today I had 100 dekes, 4 guys , dog and all the normal crap, and at half throttle I was running 4300, empty I can nail 5k at half, take it out of water and it revs to rev limiter instantly with minimal pressure, honestly it dont matter, you are losing traction with warn prop. it's slipping, and you ain't getting going fast, dint take but a little sand to ruin a new prop. they are touchy

Alright. Well I'll see if my buddy will let me. Borrow his new prop and see. Been thinkin about gettin the hammer. Maybe it's time

Post subject:  Motor hits rev limiter at 1/4 throttle???

My motor would push A new Big Blade 4150 in the water and run 28mph. That prop doesn't have much room to wear before its shot.

My GD 3 blade prop spun 3750 new and ran 26mph. After over 100 hours it's just now hitting 4100-4150 and running 28mph. I actually had to wear some cup down to get better speeds. But lost some performance in the shallows with the lost cup.

Once a prop loses cup it's worthless. The BB in my opinion is more of a performance prop that works best when new.

Anyone ever weighed a Mud Buddy big blade and a GD 2 blade? I held one in each hand and there's a noticeable difference.

Post subject:  Re: Motor hits rev limiter at 1/4 throttle???

When I really noticed it starting to mess up was when I had my deck on the front and was tryin to push all the weight it seemed like it slowly lost speed and push. I thought clutch was bad because it was all rusted. I sent pictures to mud buddy and they said it looks bad so I replaced it and could feel it hooking up more but still wouldn't push like it should. Hopefully it is the prop
