Let me see if I can find the stuff I used in my basement. I haven't had any issues with it coming off I probably have 50 hours on it.

 Re: touching up my exhaust.
if the metal is not cleaned properly when painting the exhaust. the paint prolly will not stick. my exhaust was not rusted that bad just wanted to do preventive maintenance.

 Re: touching up my exhaust.
My theory is........Your boilers are made of heavier material that don't experience the number of expansion and contraction cycles the thin gauge pipes do. The paint gets dry and brittle, and does not move with the metal.

My exhaust doesn't glow red hot. My marsh mellow exhaust will just have to be painted from time to time . I got some stuff from work I'm gunna try they put on the heat exchanger tubes at work. It's kind if like flex seal. Jimmy w no need to be an ass

 Re: touching up my exhaust.
Fresh water rinse after using it to get the mud off (if any). Idle it up to dry off the water. While running at ~2000-2500 RPM's, spray WD-40 very liberally through the brush guard above/in front of your flywheel depending on if you have vertical/horizontal shaft engine. Let the muffler cool down and then soak it down good with WD-40.
You will not get any paint to stay on the muffler and especially not the headers. The only coating that will stand up to the heat would be a ceramic coating...but that won't stay adhered due to temperature cycling....thermal contraction/expansion.
We use ceramic coatings on process heater tube exteriors which see direct flame firing in a firebox over 1400 degrees F. The tube metal temperatures see 900-1000 degrees. The main reason we use the ceramic coating on the tubes is to prevent scale from being created on the tube exteriors. The scale decreases the heat transfer efficiency over time....meaning you have to fire your heater harder to maintain the same process outlet temperatures. At any rate, the heaters will stay in service anywhere from 5 to 8 years before they are cycled down to ambient. Thus, we don't have an issue with the ceramic flaking/chipping due to thermal cycling.

We use the stuff at work to prevent the brine ( salt ) water from corroding our tubes. I understand what ur saying I'll have to try w-d 40

 Re: touching up my exhaust.
Fresh water, then WD40 then fresh water again. Paint will do nothing to help. The water will rinse off most of the salt, the WD40 will pull off what is left. When you rinse it a final time you will notice and shine to the motor. The salt will be gone and you will be good to go. Your motor will not have that nasty oil build up or rust.

 Re: touching up my exhaust.
Jimmy still gives u no reason to be a total ass. And no that's no what's we use on our exchanger or boiler tubes , we use that on our heater in our star age tanks that only get 85 degrees. I didn't know u were the know it all of mud motors. Who gives a shit how long uv ben messing with mud motors. Does not make u an expert. A shitty mechanic can say the same thing if he's worked on motors 30 years ? This is a forum and what it's intended for, to share information. I Never even argued that the paint won't come off. I'm looking for something that would hold up the longest that I just need to touch up time to time. But I'm ok with just washing it down and cleaning it with W-D 40, them rinsing it off. Look at the topic title. Don't get ur panties in a wad just because you disagree with someone.

 Re: touching up my exhaust.
If its a stock exhaust it will rust from the inside out ....If it's a marsh mellow it's stainless and if you keep it cleaned and oiled, it will discolor but not have any surface rust. Jimmy ain't being an ass, he's jimmy...... and he is correct.... nothing will stick to that thin gage metal when it gets hot and expands..... it will flake off after an hour or two of running hard.....

 Re: touching up my exhaust.
Oh and with a stocker on a horizontal motor, what rusts and comes apart on the inside will fall down through the header into the heads and do all kind of damage..... my buddies did that after about 8 months and he ended up with a new motor from Briggs warranty......

 Re: touching up my exhaust.
There's no rust on the inside. Just on the outside. Cleaned the the exhaust easy but the metal bands are a bitch to clean. Like I said I'm looking for a way to preserve the exhaust not necessarily paint it. If the WD-40 works I'll do that. The exhaust wast bad just wanted to clean it know then later.

 Re: touching up my exhaust.
Salt , brackish, and fresh. I'm afraid to try to unbolt the exhaust and clean the inside. My top bolts on the exhaust are realy rusted, afraid they will snap. Thanx I might try corrosion x. Alls I have is WD-40 right know. The bands are the only corrosion I have left on the exhaust. But it's no big deal. Just wanna keep my motor in nice working and clean condition .
