well im thinking bout tackling the process of building a custom exhaust and wondered if anyone has done this that has pictures of building it and what kind of things should be taken in account when figuring out how to set it up. also would straight pipes be a good idea? or should i put some sort of muffler on there like a motorcycle muffler? i am going to be doing this for a 20 hp B&S im not really looking to amp up the speed or nothing i just have a rusted out muffler and figure it might be cheaper to just build me my own. what are yalls thoughts and opinions? |

I use the flanges from the original muffler then step it to 1 1/4. 2 to 1 style with bout 20 inch headers. Then mount muffler of choice on the backbone of the lt. Is your a lt? Ive used single glasspacks or dual stock sportster mufflers. The stock harleys are the quieter of the two The tubing u can order from jegs or summit. ya its a longtail and alright ya i was debating on doing a 2 to 1 style or doing dual exhaust. just kinda which ever looks better and works.. dont need to go messing anything up. is there any pros or cons to doing a 1 muffler compared to 2? and if you need help with posting a picture all you do is go to tinypic.com upload your picture on there then copy the source code that has the Img< code on the beginning of the code. once you copy that code just past it in here and it will work |

There are several on here that have built their own. I have built several SS to mimic the stock one on my 36. Use the search feature and you will find all sorts of different designs. |

ya i searched a few and it gave me some ideas but im curious if there is any difference from doing a dual muffler set up where its two small straight pipes to two glass packed or atv/dirtbike mufflers (which would be extremely easy to do) or doing a 2 to 1 where you pretty much make headers down to 1 glass pack muffler or dirtbike/atv muffler |

Pic is 2 harleys. Normaly a 2to 1 has a smoother sound. True duals are more "poppy". Having a little xtra length on your header increases torque. Hopefully this pic will attach |

This one has an x pipe to balance the sound. Its pretty quiet and runs on a tour boat on caddo. Sounds good an performs good with other modd |

Yes sir. There are many different ways. Just have fun with it. If it flows too good u might have to up jet your carb. But thats not hard |

If your motor flows more air u will need to add a bit of fuel to keep your engine runnin cool. Not enough fuel and your motor will run lean and hot. By "upjet" i mean increasing the size of the main jets in carburator. For nice exhaust only i add 5-8% on mainjet size |

Since I work at a machine shop I made the flanges! ! I ordered the 1 1/4 stainless tubing already bent I welded caps on 1/4 wall 5" tubing then took a skim cut to cut the weld down and give it a smooth look |

Quick an easy. Small diameter and long tube header. 2/1 collector. Glasspack and flex joint from oreilly bout 75 bucks total . These pipes make for a very strong motor |

. I used the old flanges and used a piece of 3 inch processing pipe with a 1 inch stub out the back cut on a 45 with 2 homemade caps be ready to be the center of attention on the river cause when you have it loud people Ganna stare lol |

Not to hijack this thread or anything, but since were talking about exhaust, where the hell can I get some new exhaust bolts? I have been using the same stock rusted ass bolts for a while now and the head is starting to round. |
