I took my exhaust off cause I sold it we'll i decide while it's off (I'm a clean /neat freak by the way )we'll it's was all black so I figure why not clean it while it's off we'll I had some carb cleaner so I spray some on a wrag and start to wipe and shit starts flaking off I know it's just built up soot idk how cause it's always running wide open luckily the valve is closed and none of the stuff fell in the head but I'm wondering should i leave the other side alone or clean it as we'll only thing is the other side is open

1) at 4000 rpms, gasoline is ignited 33 times per second. when gas is burnt it make soot. it happens, sorry.

2) rotate the flywheel or bump the starter till that vavle closes, and then clean it all you want.

Ok so it's normal thought it might have been because I've been running a167 jet for the past 6 months so even if some gets in the heads shouldn't hurt

I wouldnt let a solvent of any sort run down into the motor, but a few carbon flakes you can just blow out with an air compressor.

And yes, it should be black inside the exhaust ports, but you should not see any major carbon builds ups.

Cant really tell much from that pic, but from what I can see it doesnt look bad.

If you are really concerned with it, run a pint of marvel mystery oil (or some sort of cleaner) in your next tank of gas. It will douche all of that carbon out and look like brand new after you suck the tank down.

The marvel mystery oil we use at work they spray on steel tools so they won't rust is that the same stuff it's red we got it in 50 gal drums

Boat dr that's that's one pint per 6 gal of gas

Post subject:  Re: This is what I get for messing with stuff

I dont have a bottle handy, but the normal mixture is like 3 oz per 6 gallons of gas, "normal" meaning for every day usage. For motors that require cleaning, I like to put 3 to 5 times that for a healthy cleaning, and then go to the normal mixture once ever couple months.

I use to recomend a product from yamaha called ring free. They recomend to run it thru their 4 stroke outboards once every 4 months or so to keep them clean. It is some awesome stuff, but a qt of ring free is almost $50, and in these Briggs motors Marvel does equally as good of a job for only $8/qt.

Ok I'll mix it triple to what it says on the bottle for cleaning out this one time and every once and a while I'll just run it through again

Boat Dr. Have you tried the new Briggs 5 in 1 they just came out with? Talked to my rep yesterday and told him we use sea foam and he said this is supposed to be a little cheaper.

Mineral oil in gas will clean carb build up and spray bottle of water sprayed into carb while motor is up on RPM will clean valves and decarbon pistons. Just make sure motor is running hard before spraying water in carb.

Ever seen a head gasket leak putting Antifreeze in to a combustion chamber? Very easy to tell which cylinder is getting the moisture. Ask an old school auto mechanic about decarboning engines. Or a diesel mechanic about water injection. Spraying small amounts of water in carb loosens carbon inside combustion chamber, on valves and piston rings. Hydrotex used to market a product called Essential lube it was Mineral oil, you could use it in every oil based fluid in a engine, sales rep use to drink it to show us he wasn't BS us. Had to be careful not to drink to much at his demos or he would have the shits.

I work on natural gas powered engines. On every PM I run two 20oz bottles of water through the intake while they're at full load and RPM. Boy you should see some of the crud that comes flying out of the exhaust. On the bigger engines (600+hp) I normally do a gallon or more. I basically drizzle it past the inspection of test ports in the intake and let the engines vacuum pull it in at a steady rate... Sometimes it'll miss and cut up for a few seconds while it's working but when it lines out it'll be good to go. I also always do this BEFORE I install fresh plugs so it doesn't break trash loose and foul a new plug.

Moral of the story, don't be afraid of water... I just installed a water injection system on my brothers duramax. As long as it's atomized and you don't just drown it to the point of bending rods you're actually doing a good thing...

Have you ever pulled a head off an engine that's had an internal coolant leak? The cylinder burning the coolant/water looks spotless... You ever heard of steam cleaning? that's exactly what happens in the combustion chamber.

So what just like one or two sprays out of a water bottle into the carb at about 4,000 rpm repeated a few times and that's it i just put new plugs in gues I should put my backup plugs in to do this
