Looking to install a cam to my stock engine with an exhaust. Whats my options on companys for cams and what you think is the best? What gains should I see with cam and exhaust? Looking to carry a load better not worried on speed.

I would do heads and exhaust first. I don't like to open up the case unless it's already leaking.

Do heads, at some point you'll have to crack the case anyway. Why not wait until then. Heads are about the best mod you can do for the Briggs 35

I disagree with the others.

If you're going to pull the entire front blower cowling assembly, the carb/intake, exhaust etc. all off of the engine to do headwork, may as well spend an extra 10 mins. and swap the cam also.

Not sure I understand Craig's reply. Getting the outdrive off to expose the case cover is a little more than a 10min job, if you are already pulling the case cover to replace a leaking gasket, then spending the extra 10mins to swap cams is really worth the little time to do it. When doing heads, you are working on the front/top side of the motor.

I agree that Headwork is the best HP gain for the $$, Exhaust and heads- if you need more you can go to carb kit or cam next but I generally recommend to exhaust the 'bolt on' mods first and do the cam if you are already opening up the case (as was posted above).

I figured for $300 I could put a cam in the motor. Heads are normally $500-$700 to get worked. Looking to do a little at a time to finally get to a stage 1. I guess I will get the heads worked and throw a MAC on. When the crankcase gasket leaks I'll swap the cam out. Thanks fellas

Save yourself the $550 dollars on the exhaust and just gut your stock exhaust. Put the $550 towards a carb.

Damn guys I'm sorry....for some reason I thought this was a GatorTail engine..hence the reasoning for my comment. My apologies.

Well then it is only an additional 10 mins. Maybe 20.

Pull the clutch cover off, remove the brake caliper, and then remove the bolt (5/8" box wrench on old style, 3/8" Allen on new style) holding the reverse transmission in place, and the entire assembly can then be removed allowing you access to the 12 or so crankcase bolts.

You're so full of shit.

It'll take longer than 10 minutes just to clean and prep the gasket surface for reassembly. Last GTR I took apart, it took WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY longer than that to get that POS clutch off too.

I was in my gtr twice. I was not able to pull the reverse assembly off as one piece. I'm sure there might be some sort of trick to it, but my crankshaft extension was stuck on there like white on rice. With someone that has done it numerous times, and had all the correct tools lined out, it could probably be done fairly quickly. But for someone doing it for the first time, its gonna take a little bit.

Trying to get in touch with Jamie B to see if he's available to work my heads when he catches up.

I'm In no rush to have it done, just would like it done before the summer. I called calen a while back . Does he rework my heads or he has heads worked ready to go? I called he said I could pick some up , I just prefer to have mine done. I may just let him do everything, he does good work no doubt. A few of my buddy's have motors from him.
