New here, I was looking on getting into putting together a low horsepower mud motor kit. I looked at swamp runner mud motor kits and was thinking the small swamp runner (3.5-7hp) but I'm not set on that and want to make sure I'm getting a reliable kit. I just have a small tracker 1436 its 3 years old and in good condition, I usually put 2 people and gear in it so not too much weight. I don't make long runs usually no more than half a mile so speed isn't really an issue just looking for something affordable and reliable, don't want to invest a lot of money to have repair something after every outing. Also any input on engine choice would be awesome, I know I've seen some people use the predator 4.5hp from harbor freight but I'm concerned about reliability especially in cold weather and don't mind paying more money for something that is gonna last and work in the conditions I need it too. Thanks for any input! |

SWOMP LITE kits from Backwater are the ticket. And those Predator engines are pretty decent. I've got a 6.5 and have zero complaints. Much higher quality than the Duromax clone engine I've used in the past. |

I'd avoid any of the thai longtail kits. A friend of mine thought they were a hell of a deal until he got one and had to put up with the aluminum prop, shitty delrin bushing system and lack of performance in vegetation compared to a stump-jumper of similar hp. |

Yea after doing some research and looking around on here seems like people really like the backwater kits and they look a lot more durable and rugged compared to the thai ones even though they're more expensive. Any recommendations for the engine? |

Just bought a duro 16hp. Damadged in shipping but they are dealing with that in a very fast and Profesional way. Made my own longtail and I'm glad I went with a 16hp. My buddie had a 6.5hp on his 16ft and it was a barge, you could walk as fast as it. I have a 1448 and it scoots at 12- 15 mph |
