Post Re: DIY Mikuni kit
Well I had a chance to change the main to a 160 and run it yesterday.

Before I was getting between 24-25 (I think it's time for prop work) before season, I was getting 26-27.

After putting the mikuni 42, I was able to get 26 consistently and bump 27 at times.

I do have one question, have any of you had an issue with the motor not returning back to idle after running a while. Should the spring on the carb have enough tension to return it back to idle or do any of you run a close cable like on a motorcycle application?

Make sure your cable isn't binding somewhere

Anyone have a pic of a MB with one of these? I'm wanting to swap mine out for the Mikuni, anyone have a complete list of parts and maybe links?

Parts list at beginning of thread. Links scattered throughout this site. Google can probably cover everything for you, just gotta do a little legwork. Or buy a complete kit from boatdr or bps or pvt maybe.

When buying a Mikuni hsr42 for this setup does it matter if you get a 42-6 42-11 or 42-18 what the hell is the difference. I've had some shitty luck with the DIY stuff so just trying to get it right. Thanks

Pretty sure its just different stock jet setups, which you're gonna be using something different than that anyway.

So after reading all this the descriptions are pretty vague for someone who doesn't know about mikuni carbs or who hasn't been around long enough to catch enough conversation about em. So I ask the baseline. How much is it to buy the "mikuni carb" ready to go on an engine and work. And how much is it to piece together a "mikuni carb kit" and buy all the parts to make it work.

850 from bps.

Pieced together: 280 carb, 30 for jets and float needle seat, 135 for flange and intake adapter from pvt (don't know what it costs from bps), 20-70 for air filter, 60 for throttle cable/lever from gtr or bps. All done for 550ish.

Thank you for explaining all this. It really helps me wrap my head around it. This does add up to my theory about how the mud motor market is out of control because when rednecks get a little money, we as a sub species go apeshit. I'll just leave it stock

Post Re: DIY Mikuni kit
I just put one together for my motor a few weeks ago, and thought I would share an update with some current pricing.

Mikuni HSR 42 carb – This will be a big money saver, especially if you can find one used in good condition. I picked it up in like new condition for 200 bucks on eBay with no rebuild required.

Needle valve assembly – size 2.3; Mikuni part 16030-027 - $49
Main jet – Size varies, ordered 162.5, 165, and 167.5 - $3 each
Pilot jet – size 25 is typical, also purchased 27.5 - $6 each
I got all these parts from JersRUs.com

Push button choke – Mikuni part TM29/31. You can use this push button style or the cable style. $17 on eBay

Rubber flange adapter – Mikuni part 018-42K - $22 on Amazon

Intake adapter. This is another big money saver. The three most common are the BPS Black death, Delta performance, and Performance V-Twin. There are some performance differences. I picked up the PVT “used” off MMT but never ran for 100 and no shipping. I think they are 100+ shipping from Performance V-Twins. The Delta and BPS run 300+.

Air filter adapter - $60 from the Boat Dr. Just buy this from these guys and be happy with it.

Air filter - “Free”. I have some air filters from racing karts. The diameter was slightly smaller, but was able to stretch to fit. Buying a filter is going to run you 20-50 bucks based on your choice. The Tau Ceti FA-TOR-25-BLK is the most common choice.

I think this covers it all. The necessities. Other things to consider are a governor block, rev limiter, and rain guard. The Boat Dr carries all this at good pricing. I also hear he carries a kit similar to the above, but I didn’t ask about it.

To sum it up…I spent under $475. It’s still easily do-able for under $550.

Yea, they tripled the price on em when people started just buying the adapters instead of the whole kits.

Fucking insane. I could buy a block of billet and carve it out with a damn dremel before I would spend 305 on that cast piece of shit. Amazing how when we started piecing them together, how prices go up. That's how they cornered the market with the kit, you had to have the adapter. Or if you have a buddy with a machine shop, you can get one made for even less than that.
