Post Pro-Drive prop shaft
so this weekend, I was running in deep water with no logs, lillies, etc, but my Pro-Drive prop shaft sheared off at the jam nut coming out of the lower unit, and the prop and shaft went flying. Will this be warrantied by PD or not? It looks as if this could be a factory defect being that i haven't really been too rough on it and it only has 36 hours on it.IMG_1635.JPG

Welcome to the club. It should be warrantied as long as it's not over a year old.

Post Re: Pro-Drive prop shaft
Beach marks in the second picture show it started from something on the shaft exterior...@ 12:00. A notch, cut, groove....some sort of stress riser. It is a fatigue failure....even at 30 some-odd hours. Think about how many revolutions that shaft spins in an hour. Each spin is a fatigue cycle. This failure happened over a very short period of time. Beach marks are too far apart to be something over a long duration.

Just saw in your sig file it's a Gen III LU...prolly one of the earlier tapered shafts. They have been a problem.

Could have been an older model Gen III that H&H had on their floor. The newer model Gen III's have a slightly different design which was supposed to mitigate the stress riser created with the original Gen III shaft. You should see about getting the Gen IV LU installed. [THUMBS UP SIGN]

Post Re: Pro-Drive prop shaft
Well, same thing happened to me last night. Roughly 55 hours on my 40hp. Clutch let go at 48 hours, so I thought it was that again when my rpms went sky high. Running clean open deep water down the river back to the boat ramp. Imagine my surprise when I looked back and saw my prop was gone. Guess there isnt a better replacement shaft available. Always kept up with greasing and whatnot. Is there anything to look for on a pre ride inspection or it just happens randomly?

well, it's been my experience that it never shears when u hit logs/stumps, pipes, whatever.... so hard it kills the motor. it always seems to fail when ur turning wfo in deep water. if u look at the shaft i'm sure u will see where it was partially sheared. and it probly had a 'differant' vibration to it after you hit something. it may take months for it to finish breaking, might go all at once. it's amazing we don't shear them more often when you use the motor as intended.
I guess I've broke 3 or 4 shafts since 2003 or so. always seems to be with a new prop!!!

bring it to pd and they will fix it up.

the only thing indestructible is pussy, and that's already patented.

good luck !!!

Thanks for the responses guys. I'd buy that logic, animal. When my clutch blew it was supposedly a bad batch too. Sure hoping bad things don't come in threes for this motor, but ive got an email out to KP anyway, so we will see what shakes out. Technically the rig is 2 weeks past the year warranty by the purchase date, but it's hung on a custom rig so was never mounted and run until September when the boat was finished.

Thanks. KP warrantied everything but the prop since it likely had some wear (it did.) So I think that's a fair deal. Less than a week downtime, so I'm happy with the whole affair. Still gonna run it like it should be run and make sure to keep my trolling motor batteries charged up. It was a minor inconvenience, but a low price of admission all things considered.
