I've got a 35hp sd mud buddy. Good spark can smell gas on the plugs but it will not fire off? It seems like it I'ts labored to turn over. New starter new key switch harness tried three diff deep cell batteries. Still nothing? Ideas?

Is the motor turning over, just not starting?
Or not even turning over?

it will turn over its. Just slow. I never had any problems out of the motor untill it started this two weeks ago. I was headed across the lake and it died. Have not been able to get it to run since then. And it has a q and the mikuni if it makes any difference

Where was spark verified? plug or coil? Have you replaced the plugs because typically once wet with fuel over time they will foul and not Spark correctly under compression.
I would also check valve lash and go from there.

I also opened the top of the drive and pulled the belt drive spins free without any issues. Motor still will not run. I tried it last night and it just back fired one time nothing else.

I'd check your oil pressure safety switch next, then your emergency safety switch, from there your ignition switch. Then I would go under the valve covers and check valve train.

If it's turning over slow, I'd check voltage at the starter, then check valve lash. Sounds like the valves may not be opening like they should and it's bogging things down. If lash is fine, then get the starter load tested. If lash isnt, get it set right and see what happens. If you cant, then you may have a cam issue, or bent pushrods, etc. Also check connections on the starter to make sure it's getting full power from the battery. And stop using deep cycle batteries for starting. Those are for continuous, low drain devices. Starting and dual purpose batteries are designed for cranking.

how do I verify that the oil pressure switch is working? And is there a way to bypass the emergency safety switch?

I'll check the voltage at the starter when I get home. What should the valves be set at?
