 No gains!
I modded my 32 hp prodrive this week, delta's 305 cam, heads decked .045, delta's oversized manley valves, polished the exhaust chamber and just cleaned up the intake, ported the intake manifold and still have stock carb. I ran it today after breaking the cam in, it seems a little torquey out of the hole but im still running the same top speed and same rpms, 4100ish. I gotta be missing something here because that was a big chunk of money for no noticeable real gains. Im running a hopkins cleaver prop on a 1648 boat. Somebody please tell me im missing something

 Re: No gains!
Missing one more repeat post. Then the gains will show up! But seriously, you should have seen gains. Maybe you don't have your motor turned up? Maybe you don't have a stiff enough governor spring? Sounds like you aren't opening it up all the way.

Put a load in it. You'll figure out the difference.

 Re: No gains!
What im saying is to open up your motor some more. I bet your motor isn't maxed out at all. Make sure you are getting the most out of it.

 Re: No gains!
Define "open it up some more" granted im not hitting the rev limiter but i can see my carb is getting wot. Im not sure what else to do, and idk jack about a governor, but it doesn't seem to me like the governor is affecting it. Thats why im at the mercy of the mmt guru's

 Re: No gains!
Like jd said try it with a load now and compare it to a load before. Should hold your top speed or pretty close to it now.

 Re: No gains!
Deadbird says 4200 out of water rpms. I'd just make sure you are at, or just below the governed rpms.

 Re: No gains!
First, been there, done that.
A number of things for you to bear in mind:
1) "top" speed is effected by many things-literally dozens. A couple of biggies are boat size and configuration, and weight distribution. There are many threads on these things. 2) The mods you did are more about creating power and as already stated you will see your biggest gains when you put a load in the boat. Performance is about more than "top" speed. 3) Add the carb to that boat and you will be amazed at what that does for you. 4) At the very least, make sure your stock carb is worked (threads on this) 5) You reference rev limiter-do you have a rev limiter on this motor? If so, why? You have a governor on it. If you did add a rev limiter, do you know which one? 6) Again as already stated, your problem may be with your governor setting-either you may have it set wrong, or you may have the wrong spring on it. You are pretty safe running the motor up to 4500 rpms or so on a regular basis. You should be able to get close to that. 7) Why are you running that prop? You should go to a stock 36. Again, been there, done that. Get a good stock 36 prop. It always proved to be the best for me. Have tried several and with the 32 and the same mods, the stock 36 was the best.
This is a process sometimes and you have to keep learning, listening, and trying. You will make some mistakes and you will waste some money. Welcome to the world of modding a mud motor.
The 32 is a great platform for mods, and that motor can be a great and reliable motor for a long time if you take care of it, and continue to work out the kinks.
And most importantly.....
8) WHY DIDN"T YOU GO TO A KAWASAKI? That would have been the best use of your money. Ultimately, the Briggs is a bad motor for Mud Motors. Unfortunately, it is the one that supports the industry the most and always proven to be the best of what was available to the manuf's.
I had a couple of different 32's and they were both great motors-I just got tired of having to tear my motor down a couple times a year to fix the case gasket leak. Thus the Kawi sitting on top of my ProDrive.
Good luck-keep researching.....

 Re: No gains!
I cant make heads or tails of this governor, its missing the idle spring and a few other things. The hopkins prop is new and is what i have on at the time, i have a stock tulip prop from pd that i havent tried yet. I probably should have got a kawi for the money spent but ya know... (impulse buying) haha im probably going to throw a carb on it this week. I appreciate all the help for sure! I reckon i just expected a little more out of this rig.

 Re: No gains!
And no i dont have a rev limiter, i meant governor. Although im looking at deltas lectron carbs instead of going mikuni and they say not to even run a rev limiter once you delete the governor with new carb.

 Re: No gains!
Wonder why they say don't run a limiter? Being a 32 I'm assuming it's a non CDI motor. I've got a lectron on order but it's been a couple weeks, they're having problems getting the gasket makers to send em the gaskets, or so I was told

 Re: No gains!
I wondered that myself, im fine with running without it until you hit something and send the lower unit out of the water and over rev the engine

 Re: No gains!
I am not an expert by any stretch but over the last year I have gone the same route you have with my rig. Last season I put on decked heads and a Q pipe and seem very little to no gain. Just a little more load carrying power. Then this past Friday I installed the BPS Mikuni kit and WOW it came alive. I have a boat that plows the water and before empty I was 22.5-24ish now I'm 29. Saturday I had a load of me 225,my buddy 250, his two 12 year olds, 18 honker floaters two bags of ducks dog and gear and was running 25/26 that load would have been 14/16 tops before. I think the heads, pipe and carb when combined together really bring these motors to life.... also I'm running a non cdi 35 vanguard.

 Re: No gains!
I looked into the kawi a little bit but probably not enough since I didn't buy one lol, i may go that route in the future as im sure i'll blow this briggs up. One thing was I couldn't find any after market parts for the kawi so that kind of deterred me a little. Any good sources for cams and watnot?
