gtr 35 / vangard oil leak,
Ok, I got a Vanguard with the back cover leaking oil around a bolt head. The one near the oil sender. Not really dripping yet, but wet. I can clean it off and an hour of run time latter its wet again.
Contacted Hoyt at gator tail and got the answer it needs to be fixed and unless I have a vast mechanical knowledge to not mess with it. Well, I may not have much knowledge on Briggs small engines but I been a mechanic at a car dealership for years. If I can't figure out how to put a cover gasket on a damn small engine I guess I might as well sell my tool box.
Damn thing has about 80 hours on it. How much trouble is it? Really don't look that bad. Maybe a 6 pack or so one afternoon. What all parts wise do I need and who is the best to get the parts from? While I am at it any mods I could think about while I have it cracked open? Where can I get a service manual for this motor?
Did a search seems this is a common problem with these things? Thanks

Re: gtr 35 / vangard oil leak,
Service manual can be bought at pretty much any briggs parts house, online or local.
No, it's not that bad of a job. Will likely take you a full day though, especially your first time.
I'd do a cam while it was open.
It's a VERY common problem.

Re: gtr 35 / vangard oil leak,
Parts avalible from BPS, recommend bushing kit, new oil journal orings, gasket and new studs in block instead of bolts and nyloc nuts. Takes us about 3 hrs.

Re: gtr 35 / vangard oil leak,
Who can I call, talk to some one that knows what is going on, take my money and send me my parts. Might just go ahead and do a stage 1 or 2 while I have it down

They'll send it. Pm is fine too. They're active. Maxxis is Bayou Surface Drives near Opelousas, and Will C is Texas Mud Motors somewhere in East Texas. Not sure exactly, as I've never been over there.

Re: gtr 35 / vangard oil leak,
I bought my motor from Calen (Delta Performance) back in 2010. Since then I have ordered all of my parts through Delta. I went with the machined cover, machined gear, grade 10 bolts, o-rings, and wet gasket. Also replaced planetary seals because one was leaking. Replaced the cam and lifters while I had it open. I also cut the governor shaft and removed governor gear (due to having a Mikuni).
Did my case about 10 months and 50 hours ago. No leaks yet.

Re: gtr 35 / vangard oil leak,
I would advise not using a case gasket anymore. Machine a couple parts, get the end play in check, and use some Permatex ultra Grey and have at it.
Don't worry about planetary seal unless you mess one up, PTO seal is up to you. I recommend changing them. You also need the 2 gallery O rings. Some re use them but they are $6 for them. COntact me with any questions.
