Post Friends motor.... what should I check first?
It died on him yesterday while running. He thought it locked up. There was oil in it bit it was a little low. He added oil and tried turning it over. It turned over super slow and would not fire. He waited about 30 mins and it fired right up and he headed in.

He went out this evening for youth day. When be stopped to put decoys out the motor had been running fine. Went to start it and it was turning over super slow (kinda like a low battery). Sat there for about 10 mins then it fired right up. After the youth hunt he fired up gathered everything and went to the ramp. Once on the trailer he went to fire it up gain. Once again turned over super slow. He kept turning it and it fired. A plume of black smoke poured out of the exhaust for several seconds. It cleared up and I ran fine.

Valves? Carburetor? Timing?

Where do you think I should start?

Electrical connections, battery connections first, then starter then fuel cutoff solenoid plug and the key switch lastly assuming its a stocker carbed engine. Prolly some corrosion on battery or starter leads. Clean ground and tighten...

Will do. He already checked all the electrical connections and tested the battery voltage today before going out though.

It is a bone stock motor. A 2009 mudbuddy.

You have to load test the battery. Just checking the resting voltage won't tell the whole story.

Go buy a battery load tester. They are cheap and you will be surprised how often you will use it or somebody you know will need it.

Another friend load tested the battery. It is fine.

When it shuts off and has a hard time turning over. At this point with the clutch engaged you cannot spin the prop by hand. Give it 30 minutes then you can and it will fire up resulting in a plume of black smoke briefly. Then it purrs like a kitten.... until it gets hot and you turn it off.

I've run across this issue.. Customer insisted on me buying him a new starter.... I said they RARELY go out. I will find the issue. It was the yellow Start wire from the sealed connector to the starter solenoid terminal. It had a nick/bend that was overlooked. Once hot motor wouldn't turn over at all. Once cooled a little it would slowly turn over and fire... CHECK wiring.
Needless to say he was happy with a lesser bill and a functioning motor again.

Yep. Starters RARELY go out. I must've pissed off "Denso, the starter god" or "Bart, his sidekick"....

The part that gets me is the inability to grab the prop by hand and get it to budge when the motor is hot. Then when it cools off it will turn by hand..

Sounds like it's almost hydrolocking with gas goin on top of the piston. Does the oil smell like gas? May be a needle/seat issue...

Agree with concensius...electrical connections, then battery. Also look at your main wiring harness at those connectiors, then the switch and it's connectors.

Check all grounds. 12v systems are very ground sensitive, even though they may look good, sometimes they need to be cleaned. A good volt meter will help.
