Post 23 HP Vanguard BPS Carb Kit Install Problems
Hey guys, new here and I'm trying to set up the rev limiter on my motor (Go Devil Surface Drive) but I can't seem to figure out where the hell the red and green wires go. I've got the black one grounded on a shroud bolt. I do not have a yellow looking circuit breaker attached to my starter like the picture shows in the instructions and if I just put the green wire on what I think is the brass stud the motor won't fire up. Any help would be much appreciated since I'm already frustrated! Any other tricks and tips installing this on a 23?? Thanks again.

Red 12volt supply ( off the ignition switch only when on)
Green to the stud that goes to the coils
Black ground

sorry to dig up an old post but I am having the same issue. Do you have a better picture of where the Red wire hooks up to?

There should be a white wire that has a cap over it (not hooked to anything) that you connect the red wire to. I can get a pic tomorrow if you need it still.

Edit: it was a white wire on my motor. It may also be a red wire. Will be coming out of the wiring harness that comes from the key

Yes that would be helpful. I made my own wiring harness. I got the swomp kit with the motor off craigslist and wired up the ignition myself. The guy told me I couldn’t buy the prewired harness and gave me the schematic so the wire colors likely wont match up.

Found this pic on my computer. White wire circled. Basically you just need to connect to any wire that is supplying 12volts when the key is in the on position. If you can’t figure it out with the pic then use a volt meter to find the wire to use or which prong to use on the key switch.

BPS website and jacks small engines both sell the original key switch and the wiring harness. Not sure why you couldn’t use those. But if you have a diagram you should see which wire is carrying 12v in the on position.

The wires coming out of the harness in that pic are as follows

Red: to voltage regulator
Yellow with flat connector: to mercury switch then to bottom part of starter solenoid when key is in start position. You may not have mercury switch so this may go straight to solenoid.
Yellow orange: battery power to key from top brass post on starter solenoid
Orange: to ground
Black: kill wire to coil post. kills spark when key is in off position. (same place where green wire from rev limiter goes)
White: 12v supply when key is in on position (where red wire from rev limiter goes)

Note, many small blocks are now cdi coil motors. If yours is cdi then the rev box is not to be installed. Stock cdi coils will tap out around 4300

This might seem like a dumb question but how do I know if I am cdi or not?

You would need to remove the cowling. There is a small black wire that plugs into the coils. If that wire has a small clear cover near the coils with a diode inside that clear Porsche then its non cdi. Straight black wire= cdi
