Post Gatortail 37 EFI Engine Light
Looking for some insight as to why my "check" engine light may be coming on...seems to only come on when idling and having the motor slightly trimmed down. Has come on when idling in reverse while being trimmed down however after touching the throttle slightly it goes off. Oil level is at the full line with motor perfectly leveled. Talked to the boys at Gatortail and they said it wasn't something to worry about and to just keep an eye on it and if it stays on to go get the code read and see what the issue is. I've called around to local Briggs dealers and no one has the necessary equipment to read the code should I need to have diagnostic work done. Thought maybe someone could provide some information as to whether this should be a concern or not.

Send it in for codes to be read. I've been seeing a lot of them with large CPS gaps causing noisy signal from CPE so you can get a misfire and its detected at lower RPM.

Post Re: Gatortail 37 EFI Engine Light
I was able to use the MIL blink code and it is showing code 0336 which is the (CKP) crankshaft position sensor...looks like MaXXis85 was on the money. Now the real question is where do I go from here. I was reading through the manual trying to get the basic premise for deterring what's causing the issue but am hesitant to start messing with things for fear or really tearing something up. Any advice is much appreciated.

Set a .030 or less and Clear ECM Memory. That should alleviate the issue.

Thanks so much for all the help, just to be clear I just need to pull the cover and use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the target wheel and CKP? If so I guess my only other question is do you know of a way to clear the ECM without using the Tiny Scan Code Reader? I was digging through the service and diagnostic manual and haven't come across another way.

THE ON-OFF sequence 5 times to reset ecm, end on OFF unlink the 2 time sequence for blink codes that end ON.

I dug into it and checked gap...it was a bit over .032. That's the biggest my guage went so not sure exactly. I adjusted it down to .026 and my question is do you line up one of the teeth of the gear with the bottom of the sensor then measure or just stick the gauge in at any point square with the sensor to get the measurement? After adjusting it still threw the code after clearing it so not sure if maybe I'm not close enough. Also the sensor isn't perfectly square with the gear so not sure exactly how perfect it should be

Square it up with teeth ring and measure under a tooth. I had a briggs rep tell me take it down to .020

After adjusting CPS sensor to well within spec it seems I am still throwing s code albeit doesn't seem to be as often. I talked to the guys at Gatortail and they said this was "normal" in regards to getting code 0336. Not sure where to go from here. Motor runs great I am just looking for a resolution.

I am assuming you are clearing the ECM memory? If not it will be stored in History

Yes sir doing the on off sequence five times and ending on off. Then waiting ten seconds and will check for any codes and get the six then one blink showing there is no codes in memory. I have the gap at .023 so I guess the only thing to try is to go ahead and take it down to .020 and a just make sure that doesn't do the the trick. Kinda at a loss at this point.

Other things that can cause P0336. Long crank times, running out of fuel, and or cylinder misfire. Any of these thing can contribute to lost count from the CPS. It only take 30 triggers to set off the code.

In regards to "long crank time" I assume your refusing to it taking longer to start than it should? Doesn't seem to be running out of fuel from what I can tell. As far as how it runs it runs great. How would I go about detecting a cylinder misfire?
