Mud buddy 4400-7000 mod question
I was just wondering what is done to the mud muddy motors to make a 4400, 5500 mag, 7000etc.... there is only soo much internal work that can be done. Is the extra HP rpm driven?

Re: Mud buddy 4400-7000 mod question
not just mud buddy motors, but mods in general, produce more Hp. Head work, exhaust, carb, cam, pistons, push rods, roller rockers. Theres a lot that can be done to make hp. as for as hp rpm driven, you get more rpms with mods. But you can also have lower rpms if the prop is bigger too. Lots of variables and you asked a very open ended question. I know nothing about mods compared to a lot of people, but hopefully I helped?

Re: Mud buddy 4400-7000 mod question
There's a chart somewhere on the mb site showing the mod differences between their specific designations. The 7000 was every mod available, less mods for the lower numbers. The black death vs the mags=different combinations, but hp could be comparable (compression can be built with headwork or internals or both), depending on which mods were done.

Re: Mud buddy 4400-7000 mod question
A 45 Mag is flat top pistons, h beam rods, roller rockers, push rods, a cam and stainless steel valves. Stock height heads
Add a mikuni to that andyou have a 55 Mag
The mags were developed by Al Hodges from Performance V-Twin. The goal was to get the compression but retain the correct valve train geometry.

I believe the the 5500 has ported heads where as the 45mag has stock ports

The 5500 bamf has headwork. The 55 mag does not.

Re: Mud buddy 4400-7000 mod question
I wonder why they don't deck the heads initially. It seems like that is the absolute first thing that everyone recommends getting done. Then exhaust, carb, cam etc.
Does the 45 mag run crazy RPMs? Why would they swap the rods?

Re: Mud buddy 4400-7000 mod question
2 ways to build compression. Longer rods or decking the heads. Some engines don't like decking, but the Briggs doesn't care. Not the case with all engines. The 45mag recipe uses a longer rod with shaved pistons. Some engine internals won't hold up to higher than designed rpms (lawnmower engines are designed to run steady throttle, typically at 3600 rpms, and when we mod, we're spinning way past that) and some will. So one school of thought is to upgrade the rods and pistons and build compression at the same time instead of jacking with decking the heads. Some say decking the heads is simpler, and the stock internals are fine up to 4700, so just go that route. The end result is similar rpms with similar compression numbers, and the briggs responds fine to both methods. The black death motors, I THINK, mostly only use decking to build compression.

Re: Mud buddy 4400-7000 mod question
Its my understanding that pvt was one of the o.g. builders. Al dosent believe in changing the valvetrain geometry so he used longer rods/pistons to build compression and to have a better rod. But tons of shaved heads later its been proven that decked heads with a little shorter valves to when needed gets it done. stock rods hanging out to 4900 now. I think Briggs has made some improvements through the years. Or could be pure horsecrap

Re: Mud buddy 4400-7000 mod question
Yes, Al made all the original 45mags for mud buddy. They began to reverse engineer them and build them in house and Al quit making them. The 45 mags came with a 5100 rev limiter. I just cannot do it. I keep mine under 4700.
He used stock height heads but he ported them and used 1 piece SS valves.

Re: Mud buddy 4400-7000 mod question
So with the increased duration of the spark caused by the resistor type NGK Boots and the increased distance the fuel/air mixture travels to reach the combustion chamber, these 2 things combined can increase horse power by 20%????????? Hmmmm some of that mud motor engineering magic?
